The question that exposes every politician ⚠️
Four questions, borrowed from Machiavelli and about 500 years old, used as a filter on modern politics. Tegan Broadwater walks through each one: the calibre of the people a leader keeps close, whether authority needs volume behind it, how criticism is received, and the difference between being loved and being tolerated. Run any figure in public life through the four and most stop at the first. The point he lands on is what that says about the people arguing on their behalf.

The CIA waited for 15 years to recruit this man 😳
Former CIA operations officer Jim Lawler explains that people almost always turn down a recruitment pitch out of fear. One African intelligence officer told him plainly that his country hangs people for what Lawler was proposing — and then asked whether he could take a rain check. His son was three years old. In 15 years the boy would be old enough for college, and at that point he might need the money. Lawler wrote the conversation down and filed it. Fifteen years later Africa division asked him whether he thought the man had meant it. He said yes, and the rain check was cashed.

Why the CIA gave him the nickname 'MadDog' 🤣
Jim Lawler spent 25 years as a CIA operations officer. He describes being attacked by a German shepherd — a breed he says has about the most vicious bite of any dog, thousands of pounds per square inch — pulling his leg out of its jaws, working out that nobody outruns a dog, and beating it off with a big stick. He was given a tetanus shot and then told the dog was almost certainly rabid, because it never barked or growled, it just attacked. Rabies, he was told, is 99.9999% lethal. So he sat down and made a list of all the people he was going to bite if he developed it. That is where the nickname came from.

We Spilled Blood and Just Took Over⚠️
Every empire got where it got the same way, and every empire tells the story differently afterwards. Tegan Broadwater walks through the mechanism: expansion by force until someone pushes back, followed by the version that ends up in the textbooks. Manifest Destiny was not a negotiation and the Panama Canal was not a goodwill project — what separates a conquest from a destiny is mostly who got to write it down. His point is not that you should stop loving your country, but that you can condemn an action and still admit you have benefited from it.

How to tell who will make a 'bad' CIA agent 😅
Jim Lawler recruited foreign spies for the CIA for 25 years and has taught thousands of CIA, FBI and DIA officers how to do it. One of the things he says he can pick up on is an addiction to Jason Bourne films and the belief that the job on the inside looks the same way. His answer to it is short: nobody is being issued an Aston Martin and a bunch of silenced weapons.

The CIA told him he is a sociopath... he agrees 😳
Jim Lawler spent 25 years as a CIA operations officer, persuading foreign nationals to spy for the United States. Asked whether he ever feels bad for the person he is working on, he says he is probably sociopathic and that not much stops him once he is going after somebody. He then repeats what one of the agency's own psychologists told him — nothing but a sociopath, but one within lanes — and says the lanes are US laws.

A CIA spy recruiter getting inside your head ⚠️
Jim Lawler spent 25 years as a CIA operations officer recruiting foreign nationals to spy for the United States. Asked whether his natural empathy was an advantage in that job, he says he never once recruited a happy person in his career — you recruit unhappy people, people who are under stress. Taking some of that stress into yourself and offering relief, almost like a therapist, is what he says gives a recruiter a real edge.

Dad, are we really poor? 😔
Sitting in a school office and close to tears, Charleston White admits to the principal that he is a poor single father. His eleven-year-old son is in the room and hears him say it. The three of them are living in a one-bedroom apartment — his daughter has the bed, his son has the couch, and he sleeps on the floor. When they get to the car, his son asks him whether they are really poor.

The CIA's wildest training course 😂
Former CIA counterterrorism officer John Kiriakou says the agency's operations training was more fun than anything else he has ever done, including courses with names like Crash and Bang, where officers learn to drive cars through roadblocks. It also cost him a knee replacement. Kiriakou explains that trainees are not handed nice cars to wreck: the seat comes away from its mounting on impact, the knees go into the dashboard, and the leg breaks.
