"Everywhere I go I'm asked if I think the university stifles writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. There's many a bestseller that could have been prevented by a good teacher." ~Flannery O'Connor

I've read several self-published books that are filled with grammatical errors, misspellings, and just plain poor writing.

Some books are not interesting, either in subject matter or in the telling. A good writing guide would steer me into a more interesting subject, or at least into a more interesting way of presenting the topics.

“Writing is a form of therapy; sometimes I wonder how all those, who do not write, compose, or paint can manage to escape the madness, the melancholia, the panic fear, which is inherent in a human condition” Graham Greene (English novelist, short-story writer, playwright, and journalist, 1904-1991)

While still in elementary school one of my Sunday school teachers told us to go home and figure out what our talent was. I stewed all week trying to figure that out.

I couldn’t play the piano. I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. I never won the track races and I always came in second in spelling. My art teacher told me I didn’t have talent in that area.

What was my talent?

That next Sunday I walked to church still trying to figure it out. When it came my turn I said, “A smile. That’s my talent.”

And it was and is my greatest talent.

Later the smile became laughter. That’s why I call myself a “laffologist” when I am speaking. My stories are true and they make people laugh.

Marriage between two people of the same religious background, the same cultural heritage, and the same general up-bringing is still difficult. That’s not to say unequal marriages can’t work, but it is so much harder.
The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 6:14 that we are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. That picture is of oxen yoked together which are of unequal size and strength. If someone ties him or herself to someone of a different belief, their wagon of life together certainly won’t give a smooth ride.

When dealing with negative news, the "fess up" strategy is usually the most effective strategy, but it is often the one that is the least often used. If you make a mistake, apologize and move on.

Fear is the main stumbling block to writing. Fear of being laughed at; fear of rejection; fear of not knowing enough; even fear of revealing too much of yourself and fear of making people mad at you.

That's where a guide who has been there and done that can relieve those fears and walk you through them to success.

Writing is healing. If I've been hurt or gone through some kind of trauma, I'll write about it. I'll start with a journal.

When I find relief from the pain I've experienced, I'll write about it. The neat thing is that someone else is going through almost the same thing. They will benefit from reading about my success.

Is it valuable to have help in writing your book? Only if you want to be professional in your presentation.

Maybe you think you're too young to write.

Willa Cather says, "Most of the basic material a writer works with is acquired before the age of fifteen."

You can reach younger people than I can in my writing. You're there. You understand.

"It is the writer who might catch the imagination of young people, and plant a seed that will flower and come to fruition."- Isaac Asimov

All writers can benefit from help on the road to producing a book - no matter what their age. Find a coach.

What are you an expert in?

Readers expect to see the credentials that qualify you to write on the subject you have chosen. Credentials can come in a variety of ways. Most writers have PhD, or RN or MD or some other letters after their name to qualify them to write on the subject.

Others site their experience as qualification. i.e. Have taught school on this subject for x number of years; have lived in this area for x number of years; served a prison sentence; have gone through a nasty divorce; have survived cancer; etc.

Experience is often more convincing than studies. But if you are writing about astronomy you need more credentials than just having observed the stars for x number of years. If you are writing about theology the reader wants to know how you know what you know.

You may be an excellent writer, but you have to "sell" yourself to the reader before he will give you a chance to prove yourself.

“LANGUAGE OF MUSIC” BY GUY JAMES (GUITAR PLAYER)

How does music speak to you? We all have filters and interpretations. Here are a few thoughts on how I have filtered music and what it means to me.

Proverbs 17:22 tells us “A merry heart does good, like medicine. That means laughter. We know the Bible is truth.

So how does laughter do good like medicine? Now medical studies have proven that 30 minutes of laughter each day improves your health. A new organization has arisen called Laughter Yoga, where people just get together and laugh. It is spreading because it makes people feel so good.

Laughter creates endorphins that make you feel good. It exercises your internal organs. It stirs up your energy. You might say, well, I can't laugh over nothing. You can though.

I have been in the network marketing industry for years and have gone through hours of training. One of the companies taunted that you would get rich selling their products. (I didn't). They told us to "fake it till you make it." In other words we were to pretend we were rich.

I'm here to tell you can fake laughter until you make it. Your brain or subconscious doesn't know if your laughter is fake, or you are truly joyous.

Once a Mexican man wanted to buy a goat from a Tarahumara man. He decided that if he got the Indian drunk he could get a better deal on the goat. He bought a bottle of booze and met with the Indian. The Indian agreed to sell. Before a price was agreed on, the Mexican man offered a large drink. The Indian drank it, and accepted another. The buyer continued with small talk and drinks until the seller was quite drunk.

"How much will you take for your goat, my friend?"

"No, I don't think I'll sell. I only wanted to sell it so I could get drunk. Now, since I'm already drunk, I don't need to sell my goat."

This is one of my "yet-to-be" published stories from a wonderful little spiral notebook I discovered in my file.

Emily Seate wrote: Why write? To entice a stranger to want to read what you have written, to keep him turning pages, to leave him glad he took the time to enjoy what you wrote, to make him want to tell others how good your book is. In the best books, we either learn something new or something about ourselves or both.
