John Townes Van Zandt, born on this day in 1944. He was an influential American singer-songwriter, known for his profound and poetic contributions to country, folk, and blues music. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Van Zandt’s raw, emotional lyrics and haunting melodies garnered him a devoted following, despite never achieving mainstream commercial success. His music often reflected themes of sorrow, love, and loss, with songs like "Pancho and Lefty," "No Place to Fall," and "To Live Is to Fly" becoming iconic in the Americana and folk music scenes. Van Zandt's stripped-down acoustic sound and melancholic voice resonated deeply with both fans and fellow musicians, earning him the respect of artists like Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and Steve Earle.
Throughout his life, Van Zandt struggled with personal issues, including addiction, mental health challenges, and a turbulent career that kept him from finding wider recognition. Nonetheless, he became a cult figure, revered for his authentic storytelling and raw honesty. Despite his difficulties, Van Zandt’s work continues to inspire generations of musicians and listeners, cementing his legacy as one of the most gifted and influential songwriters in American music history. His profound impact on the genres of folk, country, and Americana endures through his timeless songs and the continued admiration of his work by artists and fans alike.

Historical marker, indeed!

Historical marker, indeed!

I love history in plain sight. This modest, unassuming structure, located at 2605 W. Highway 80 in Big Spring, is a shrine of Texas music, as important to the development of the honky-tonk sound as Liverpool's Cavern Club was to the British Invasion. You see, this building is what housed the "Ace of Clubs," a honky-tonk at which, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the great Lefty Frizzell got his start. As I'm sure y'all are aware, Lefty revolutionized country music in the early 1950s with songs like "If You've Got the Money, Honey (I've Got the Time)," and "I Love You In a Thousand Ways" ---- songs that kick-started the whole honky-tonk genre. Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and others idolized Lefty.

The Ace of Clubs was a rough place: performers performed behind chicken wire to protect them from flying beer bottles and there were many bloody fights in the parking lot. It's definitely one of those "if these walls could talk" places. Other famed performers also played the Ace over the years, like Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, Waylon Jennings etc .... The Ace of Clubs was in danger of falling to the ground about 15 years ago but it has since been bought, cleaned up and shored up. It really needs to have a Texas historical marker on it.
