We did it! Thanks to the generosity of Beckley's RVs and David L., we’ve officially hit our fundraising goal for the 2025 season of Guitars for Girls! 🎸

I am absolutely floored—and so, so grateful. This means another year of putting high-quality instruments into the hands of girls who see themselves as songwriters, guitar players, and bandleaders.

And of COURSE thank you to everyone else who got us this far. It was the power of our COMMUNITY that did it.

Today is ! Did you know Hazel Dickens grew up in a West Virginia coal mining community?

Next week on WBCM - Radio Bristol Book Club, we will be discussing "Working Girl Blues: The Life and Music of Hazel Dickens" by Hazel Dickens and Bill C. Malone. In this book, Malone introduces Dickens' life, musical career, and development as a songwriter. Dickens then presents forty original songs that she wrote about coal mining, labor issues, personal relationships, and her life and family in Appalachia, providing comments on each one, explaining how she came to write them and what they meant and continue to mean to her.

Tune in at 12:00 on Thursday, June 26th for the on-air book discussion! (100.1 FM or stream it online) Radio Bristol Book Club is a partnership with Bristol Public Library.

I’m still reeling from the generosity and magic that unfolded last Sunday during our Guitars for Girls fundraisers.

Thanks to the incredible team at Classic Electric Tattoo & Body Piercing our Guitars for Girls Flash Tattoo fundraiser more than doubled the funds we raised from the benefit concert and silent auction.

That’s right - 22 people walked out with a tattoo and walked into our mission, helping us raise $2200 in a single day. 🤯

Thank you to every single one of you who got tattooed. None of this would have worked if you hadn’t participated.

If you weren’t aware, every artist there volunteered their time, devoting their entire Sunday to helping us empower the next generation of girls in Frederick and greater Appalachia through musicianship, songwriting, and band leadership.

If you’re looking to get a tattoo, these are your people. Please consider following their work and supporting them the next time you’re in the market for a new piece:

Eric, I’m totally overwhelmed and deeply grateful.

Thank you all for being a part of this story. The best is yet to come.

At 18 years old, Grace Bowers has talents beyond her years and is seen by many as the torchbearer for the next generation of blues guitar players.

Devon Allman, Margo Price, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, and Susan Tedeschi have all name-checked the rising star, who has wowed audiences at the prestigious Newport Folk and Crossroads Festivals in recent years.

Yet, despite her success, she says many people in the music industry instantly have dismissed her.

“People don’t take me as seriously as they should,” she says. “For the most part, I feel equal.

“But there’ve been a lot of times when I feel disrespected or lesser, which is not cool.

Huge thanks to everyone who came out this weekend to support our Guitars for Girls fundraisers!

Friday night at Olde Mother Brewing Co. was a packed house with incredible live music from The Fly Birds, Katie Powderly, and The Unconditional Lovers. We even oversold the venue - what a night!

A special shoutout to for volunteering his time and talent to capture the event.

We’ll be announcing our fundraising total later this week as we shift into the application phase. The more you help spread the word about Guitars for Girls, the less we need to spend on ads - freeing up more resources for what really matters: providing guitars and music education to girls here in Frederick, MD, and greater Appalachia, regardless of their ability to pay.

Extra love to Bed Head Noise for handling PA and sound, and to The Frederick News-Post for the article from that helped amplify our mission.

Also thank you to all the band members for volunteering their time to the cause and to The Common Market Co-op for donating a gift basket for the silent auction, which raised an additional $110 toward our mission.
