The Blue Whale tongue is the largest tongue of any animal on Earth, measuring approximately 4 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and weighing approximately 3,000 kilograms. An average adult human weighs approximately 70 kilograms, meaning the tongue of one Blue Whale weighs as much as approximately 43 adult humans combined.
The tongue is not used for tasting or manipulating food as in most mammals. It functions as a muscular piston that forces water out of the mouth cavity through the baleen plates after a lunge feeding event, extracting the trapped krill. During a single lunge feeding event the tongue retracts to allow the pleated throat pouch to expand to enormous volume, then contracts powerfully to expel the water.
The force generated by this tongue contraction has been estimated at several hundred thousand newtons, making it one of the most powerful single muscle contractions of any biological structure. A human standing on a Blue Whale tongue would occupy less than 0.3% of its total surface area. π
