Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO ruled mentally competent to stand trial on s*x trafficking charges — after months in a federal prison hospital for dementia and Alzheimer’s symptoms.

A federal judge in New York has ruled that Michael Jeffries, the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, is mentally competent to stand trial for alleged s*x trafficking after being hospitalized for months for dementia and Alzheimer’s symptoms. U.S. District Court Judge Nusrat Choudhury ruled Thursday that Jeffries “clearly possesses a rational and factual understanding of the proceedings” and is a “reasonably intelligent person and skilled communicator.” The judge said she reviewed testimony and written reports from medical experts and listened to hours of phone calls Jeffries made to his romantic partner, lawyers and others while in custody.

Jeffries’ lawyers had argued he required around-the-clock care to deal with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia and a traumatic brain injury, with medical experts testifying his cognitive issues were “progressive and incurable” and that he would not regain competency. That prompted the judge to order him hospitalized to see if his mental condition would improve. After about four months at the federal prison hospital in Butner, North Carolina, officials in December deemed him fit to stand trial.

Jeffries, 82, is scheduled to stand trial in October in Central Islip federal court on Long Island. The judge said she’ll take more regular breaks and run trial hours from 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday to give Jeffries time to review testimony and confer with his lawyer. Jeffries and co-defendants Matthew Smith and James Jacobson have all pleaded not guilty to federal charges including s*x trafficking and interstate prostitution, with prosecutors alleging the men used promises of modeling jobs to lure victims into drug-fueled situations.

Do you think a judge should weigh a defendant’s cognitive decline this heavily before a trial like this — or does the timeline concern you more?

Karmelo Anthony has a new judge — and this one comes with his own history in a headline-making case. Retired Kaufman County Judge Michael Chitty has been assigned to preside over Thursday’s hearing on whether Anthony deserves a new trial, taking over after Judge John Roach was recused Wednesday for his post-verdict comments. Chitty served nearly 17 years on the bench before retiring and is best known for presiding over the case tied to the 2013 murders of Kaufman County DA Mike McLelland, his wife, and prosecutor Mark Hasse — a case fueled by a revenge plot after a earlier theft conviction he oversaw resulted in probation, not prison time. Now he’ll decide whether Anthony’s defense team has grounds for a full retrial in the killing of Austin Metcalf. The hearing is set for 9am Thursday in McKinney. Would you trust a judge with this background to rule fairly — YES or NO.

Palm Beach County’s top court official appointed by Ron DeSantis is behind bars on child s*x abuse charges involving his own grandson. Michael Caruso, 67, was arrested this week and now faces five felonies: kidnapping, lewd or lascivious molestation, lewd or lascivious exhibition, luring or enticing a child, and child abuse causing mental injury. According to the probable cause affidavit, the alleged abuse began in 2024 and continued into 2025, with the victim identified as one of Caruso’s own grandchildren. Caruso was appointed Clerk of Court and Comptroller by Governor DeSantis in August 2025, after years serving in the Florida House where he backed the state’s 2023 law reinstating the death penalty for adults convicted of s*xually battering children under 12. DeSantis has since suspended him from office and called the allegations “horrific.” Caruso is being held without bail pending his first court appearance.
This is a developing story — charges are allegations, and Caruso is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Where do you draw the line when the people writing the laws are accused of breaking them worst of all? Drop your thoughts below. 👇
