An autism diagnosis can bring answers, but it can also leave parents wondering what the future will look like. ❤️

In this episode of Parenting IQ, I’m joined by Kari Baker, founder of KIND Families Kari Baker for KIND Families to talk about finding hope, getting the right support, and learning to see your child’s strengths alongside their challenges.
Your child is more than a list of deficits. A diagnosis can be a roadmap for support—not the definition of who they are.

4 things your ADHDer wants you to know…but might not know how to tell you:

1. “I’m not trying to make things harder for you.”

When I forget my backpack, lose my shoes, interrupt you, or need the same reminder again… I know it can look like I don’t care. Sometimes I know exactly what I’m supposed to do and still struggle to make my brain DO it.

Please teach me skills that will help me with this, not assume the wrong motive.

2. “Time doesn’t feel the same to me.”

When you say, “We’re leaving in 10 minutes!” I may genuinely have trouble understanding how much I can accomplish in those 10 minutes.

So please help me see time through visual timers, countdowns, clocks, predictable routines, and warnings before transitions.

Don’t just tell me to “hurry up.” It actually stresses me out and isn’t helpful.

3. “My big reaction isn’t always about the little thing that just happened.”

The broken pencil. The wrong socks. My brother looking at me. You asking me to turn off the game. It might seem ridiculous that this is what sends me over the edge.

Sometimes that tiny frustration is simply the last thing my overwhelmed brain can handle.

Before correcting my behavior, help me regulate my body.

4. “I already know I mess up a lot.”

I realize I forgot the assignments. I hear the reminders. I see your frustration.

And sometimes I might say, “I don’t care” but what I actually want to say is, “I’m tired of feeling like I can’t get it right.”

Please notice what IS going right, too.

Catch me trying. Catch me improving. Catch me being kind. Catch me using a strategy without being reminded.

I don’t need you to lower the expectations for me. I need you to believe I’m capable while helping me build the skills to get there.

ADHD can create real tension in a marriage 💍 but sometimes what feels like disrespect, irresponsibility, or disconnection is actually a sign that you need to better understand how your spouse’s brain works. 🤍

Because the goal isn’t to shame your spouse into changing. It’s to get curious, communicate clearly, build systems that support each other, and remember: You’re on the same team 💪🏼

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.”
Henry Ford

The thoughts we choose to focus on shape what we notice, how we respond, and whether we see struggles, failures, or obstacles as dead ends or opportunities to grow.

Positivity isn’t pretending everything is good. It’s believing that something good can still come from it.
