Texas students are back in class for the 2026-27 school year, and there's a lot happening in public education right now. Here are 5 things to know:

1๏ธโƒฃ New 2026 school accountability ratings were released, and Austin ISD is facing possible state intervention after two campuses hit their fifth failing rating.
2๏ธโƒฃ A new TEA rule makes it harder for districts to close struggling campuses without carrying the rating history to a new school.
3๏ธโƒฃ About 101,000 students are using the state's new Texas Education Freedom Accounts to attend private school or homeschool.
4๏ธโƒฃ Texas school boards have closed at least 150 public campuses in less than three years amid declining enrollment.
5๏ธโƒฃ Lawmakers made several major changes to public education law during the 2025 session, from cellphone bans to increased school funding.

A Trader Joe's mixed-use project in Frisco faces another delay as City Council continues reviewing the proposal.

The development would be located at Majestics Darden Drive and Main Street and includes a 12,500 square foot Trader Joe's and 158-unit senior living facility. The project has been modified based on feedback from residents, city staff and planning officials over the past two years.

City Council will consider the zoning change at its Oct. 6 meeting, which can be streamed live on the city's website.
