Chasing tornadoes is really a LABOR of love.

Lots of time in the car driving to the target, $ spent on gas/food/hotels, and plenty of times going home empty handed…but when you see something like this IT’S ALL WORTH IT!

🚨 4 YEARS AGO TODAY 🚨

August 29th, 2021

Hurricane Ida struck southeast Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane with 150mph winds. This was my first hurricane just, and man was it ever crazy!

Me and my chasing buddy Chad Casey ended up in LaPlace, LA (about 60 miles west of New Orleans) where we expected the center of the hurricane to reach later in the day. What we didn’t factor in was that LaPlace was less than a mile from Lake Ponchatrain…and millions of gallons of water!

As the conditions got worse and worse, water began to overtop the levees protecting us, and the entire area began to flood…QUICKLY! We found the 2 story, brick building, Motel 6 with a second floor exterior balcony and decided we would ride out the major hurricane there…OUTSIDE! The whole area flooded, our cars flooded, the water kept rising, and we were trapped.

During the night, a fire broke out and the sky became orange from the glow.

We were trapped for 2 days as the area was flooded and the water slowly receded, and we watched as the military and national guard rescued people.

After two days of little sleep, little food and water, and being outside, we got through the flood waters and headed home.

I’ll never forget Hurricane Ida in LaPlace, LA on August 29th, 2021.

🚨 20 years ago today! 🚨

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the central Gulf coast and produced almost unimaginable destruction. While Hurricane Katrina previously reached Category 5 strength and 175mph winds in the central Gulf, Katrina weakened to “only” a Category 3 when it came ashore. The biggest impacts would be from the levee failures and flooding in about 80% of New Orleans, which killed over 1,400 people and left much of the city unlivable. The coastal flooding from the storm surge across coastal Mississippi doesn’t receive as much attention but was no less impactful. Estimated storm surge levels reached an American record 28 feet in coastal MS, erasing the coastline and destroying most every structure.

33 years ago today (8/24/1992), Hurricane ANDREW made landfall in southern FL as a 165 mph Category 5. The destruction that would follow would be unimaginable as over 60,000 homes were completely destroyed. This is one of only four Category 5 hurricanes to strike the U.S.

Watch as this wedge tornado leaves a path of destruction near Minden, Iowa on April 26th, 2024. This was one of many tornadoes that occurred on this day across Nebraska and Iowa during a regional tornado outbreak.

Hurricane Erin is HUGE today off the southeast U.S.

08/20/2025

This morning (8/20/25) Hurricane Erin is putting on quite the show off the southeast U.S. coast. Hurricane Erin is strengthening currently and will curve off into the Atlantic and avoid a hit on the U.S.

I still can’t get over watching the Hawley, TX tornado on May 2, 2024. This was a strong tornado that moved so slowly that I was able to sit and watch for awhile as huge hail fell all around me.
