When Is a "Hybrid Publisher" Not a Hybrid Publisher? - IBPA Independent

What is a hybrid publisher? Hybrid publishing companies behave just like traditional publishing companies in all respects, except that they publish books using an author-subsidized business model, as opposed to financing all costs themselves, and in exchange return a higher-than-industry-standard share of sales proceeds to the author. Here is a list of top reasons to redesign your cover:

1) Low sales. To be honest, the cover is one of the most critical factors that influence sales. No one even looks at the book with a bad cover.

2) Strange look. Most of the successful covers in the same genre look similar. If your cover deviates significantly from such covers, there is a small chance that your book will be popular.

3) Plagiarism. Your cover should be unique as well as your manuscript, that is why it is better to use professional designer service instead of using premade covers or service where you can create the cover by yourself using premade mass elements.

4) Blurred thumbnail size. It should be easy to read the title of your book even in thumbnail size.

IBPA Hybrid Publisher Criteria - Independent Book Publishers Association

Sending a huge shout-out today to Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) and the team on the Advocacy Committee for all their hard work establishing these criteria for hybrid publishers. This is the kind of work that breaks down barriers and levels the playing field—and nothing makes me happier! #equalityinpublishing

In February 2018, the IBPA Advocacy Committee published a list of nine criteria defining what it means to be a professional hybrid publisher.

Editors, librarians, book buyers, and reps all zero in on the same thing: repeated exposure. Your publicist is largely responsible for getting your book out to review outlets, but you can supplement their efforts by doing your own research and mailings and follow-up, especially if you’re on a limited budget or once your campaign has come to a close.
