‘Parasite’ director says he learned expletives from Spike Lee movies

Filmmakers and screenwriters often make the best subtitlers. Subtitling a film is so much more than translating the dialogue – it's rewriting the dialogue for a new audience. There are language and cultural considerations that must be taken into account. It's so interesting to hear that a filmmaker like Bong Joon Ho cut his teeth subtitling Spike Lee movies.

‘Sicansíos’: ‘Game of Thrones’ dubbing mistake exposes precarious sector in Spain

"...was a result of the lack of time given to translate the episode."

It's underestimated how much time is needed to produce high-quality translation. A translator must be given adequate time to not only translate, but to research, proofread, and contemplate their work. It could take days to reach a satisfying translation of a single subtitle.

Fears over piracy and spoilers have led to strict security measures that make it harder for voice actors to do their job, while the streaming boom has increased job insecurity

Say what? Why film translators are in a war of words over subtitles

"The subtitler must decide what to prioritize at any given moment, in order to best serve the interests of the film."

Subtitling truly is an art and is often underappreciated. A good subtitler is half translator, half screenwriter.

Clumsy and insensitive translations can ruin the enjoyment of a foreign-language film. Don’t blame us, say the subtitlers pressing film-makers for more appreciation of their art

In praise of subtitles: Why reading is fundamental in 2018 TV

High quality content is originating not just from Hollywood, but from all over the world. Don't let the subtitles turn you off.

With HBO offering its first foreign-language series, "My Brilliant Friend" — and letting U.S. subscribers in on its Japanese "Miss Sherlock" — subtitles are no longer just for indie audiences.

Fab Five member promises to improve Netflix’s closed captioning

Unfortunately we see this kind of thing happen all the time. It's usually due to miscommunication between content providers and captioners.

Editing and altering the captions take away from the viewer experience and change the voices of the characters.

Enabling Closed Captions on Facebook Live Broadcasts | Facebook Media

Facebook has added this excellent new capability for their Live platform, but I do wonder if it's going to be fully utilized. A live captioner would need to be scheduled for each and every live broadcast. YouTube has had this capability for years, with mixed results.

The Art and Craft of Subtitles

"The subtitler must know—or learn—appropriate slang and jargon for a story’s particular culture or time period and ruthlessly condense dialogue into impossibly short printed lines that capture the essence of what’s happening on screen, all the while making judgment calls and being as unobtrusive as possible."

Netflix now lets you trick out your subtitles

Aesthetics are a key factor when subtitling. Things like font, color, size, placement, outline, drop-shadow, and spacing all affect the viewing experience of the user.

Netflix now enables viewers to change the look of the subtitles. Now, instead of using the default courier font in the translucent box, viewers can not only work to make the subtitles more readable, but even spice them up for certain occasions.
