Khaled El-Enany elected by the Executive Board as Director General of UNESCO
The Chair of the Executive Board has announced the results of the vote for UNESCO’s next Director-General.
Mr. Khaled El-Anani has been elected to lead the Organization.

During the session, Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director General, praised Mr. El-Eynan’s distinguished scientific background and professional journey, describing them as a “perfect complement to his ministerial experience.” She also extended her “heartfelt congratulations to Egypt — a great mediating power that is hosting crucial negotiations for peace in the region and, by extension, for peace across the world.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt emphasized that this election marks “the success of a candidate who represents a civilization and a history of unparalleled richness and diversity,” and celebrated “the election of the first Egyptian, the first Arab, and only the second African to lead UNESCO.”
The UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo congratulates the Egyptian delegation and all national authorities on this result and will continue its daily efforts to contribute to Egypt’s sustainable development and to the advancement of UNESCO’s mandate.
