They are shrinking?! Yes! Breeding for height reduction would be taboo for a show ring, but that is what we are doing with a few of our genetics.

This is Arizona.
Her dam is, Virginia 50" (Jersey x)
Her Sire is, Keely's Samson 38" (registered Mini Jersey)
She was born 26" tall

Some simple math:
Birth height + 40" to estimate mature height
Dam height - 4" (on average) to estimate mature height for offspring, when using mini bulls on Standard and Midsize cows

So, 46" either way with Virginia.

She is now almost 13 months and is 43" tall, so according to the charts is on track to stay small.

Now why in the world would we want shorter, when we need to milk these things?!

This sets us up to sell perfectly sized family milk cows, that are short mids to tall minis. Short enough to feel easier to handle, but tall enough to milk with ease!

Of course we will still have our Standards, but some will be fun sized! 😁

We did have a tall mini and sold some of her shorties, but she did not fit with what we really wanted, so was sold.

A lactating dairy cow NEEDS to be milked EVERY. DAY.
By you, by a calf... It isn't optional. Period.
Not doing so causes her pain, may ruin her udder for good or at the very least causes her production to plummet.
I don't know why this needs to be said, but I read of this di*******ry move often.
Unless you are going through the proper process of drying off your cow at the end of her lactation, SHE MUST BE MILKED! 😮‍💨🤦

Dear Milk Cow Owners:

🤦🏻‍♀️ For the love of God, please STOP letting half grown mammoth heifers/steers nurse off of your poor cows!

"She has great mothering instincts"

BALONEY! Country up and separate them for the health of the cow.

🙄😂 "How does it DAMAGE the cow??"

They'll drink them to skin and bones.
Ruin their udder attachments and ligaments.
Rip up the teats....
Take your pick.

😠 "RIDICULOUS!"

Have you scrolled through certain groups on here? You WON'T have to look very hard. Some of them have beach ball udders to start with.

And you may as well forget the idea of weaning rings after they've been nursing for so long. They won't quit.

Not helping your cow wean a leech heifer can very well ruin her worth as well. She could become a no good, lifelong herdmate nurser.
One of the worst, worthless cow behaviors.

Off to market they go! 👋🏻 🚛 Good riddance!
