It turns out Death Valley’s title as the "hottest place on Earth" might actually be based on a lie... 😳🔥
We’ve all heard the stat: 134°F (56.7°C) recorded in Death Valley, California back on July 10, 1913. It’s officially recognized by the World Meteorological Organization as the highest air temperature ever measured on the planet.
But modern climate scientists are calling foul.
As recently as December 2025, meteorologists have been pushing to get that record completely wiped from the books. Why? Because the math just doesn't add up. On that exact day in 1913, Death Valley's reading was a massive 18 degrees higher than every other weather station nearby. Experts say it was almost certainly an observer error and "essentially impossible."
In reality, modern Death Valley summers max out around 130°F (54.4°C)—which is still absolutely brutal, but a far cry from 134°F.
It wouldn't be the first time a massive record got busted, either. Back in 2012, the WMO officially disqualified a 136°F reading from Libya after discovering the equipment was faulty.
If 134°F gets disqualified, the crown for the real hottest place on Earth is officially up for grabs between the Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan. 🥵
What do you think—should they throw out the 1913 record, or let it stand? Drop your thoughts below! 👇☀️
