Garland Police Step Up DWI Patrols for Independence Day Holiday

Beginning Friday, June 19 and continuing through Monday, July 6, Garland Police will increase patrols to combat impaired driving during the Independence Day holiday period.

The additional enforcement effort is funded through the Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) Impaired Driving Mobilization (IDM) program and focuses on identifying and removing impaired drivers from the road. Officers will conduct increased evening and nighttime patrols using both marked and unmarked vehicles.

Impaired driving remains a critical issue in Texas. According to TxDOT, 1,053 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes across the state in 2024.

A first-time DWI conviction can result in fines, driver's license suspension, and jail time. The financial impact of a DWI arrest can exceed $17,000 when court costs, legal fees, increased insurance rates, and other expenses are considered.

Garland Police encourage residents to plan ahead before celebrating. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, call a taxi, or arrange for alternative transportation.

The message is simple: Drink. Drive. Go to Jail.

Garland, meet your new Mayor Pro Tem and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem! πŸ‘

Council member Chris Ott of District 8 will serve as Mayor Pro Tem.

Council member Carissa Dutton of District 6 will serve as Deputy Mayor Pro Tem.

Each year, Council elects a Mayor Pro Tem who steps in if the Mayor is unavailable and, if desired, a Deputy Mayor Pro Tem who also serves in that capacity when needed. We’re grateful for their leadership and dedication to our community!
