Olympic long jumps.

Ever watched those and thought "Huh, I wonder why they dont just do a flip for extra distance?"

So did New Zealander Tuariki Delamere. He sought to break the long jump record held by Bob Beamon at 8.90 meters. Delamere put his flip into action at a student tournament in May of 1974, landing an impressive score of 7.70, leaving everyone in attendance utterly shocked that he managed to stick the landing as well as go such an impressive distance.

Unfortunately, that same year, all types of acrobatics were banned in the event due to how dangerous they were to the health of the jumpers.

Presley M. Hale

Presley Hale was a key organizer in the events of the June 1861 Gold Robbery in Weston, West Virginia. In addition to being a key figure in that event, Hale also once owned a large store called Hale's Emporium that sits where the modern municipal building is located in Weston.

After the burning down of his store as retaliation for his part in the robbery, he would work as a hatter until his death in 1916. Hale would go on to earn the nickname of "The Grand Old Man", and would also work as a butcher in his shop on First and Main. He would finance the construction of several buildings in the city as well, such as the courthouse and jail. His shop was considered to be the main hub of the Union supporters in town.

Hale would serve on the First Legislator of the State of West Virginia, was an outspoken advocate of free education, and would serve on the board of directors for the Weston Hospital, as well.

It's hard to believe that you're looking at the first brick paved road in the state of West Virginia, but you absolutely are.

By the end of 1873, Mordechai Levi, a man from Charleston, had decided he could fix the muddy and dusty roads of Charleston. He would ally himself with Doctor John Hale, and would spend years perfecting and patening the ideas and machines that would lead to brick roads through the United States.
