Woods of Terror is a combination indoor/outdoor attraction featuring many themed scenes. Featured inside are mostly original characters with an entire section dedicated to Hollywood monsters. This attraction features such themes as a 3D clown area, a mortuary, a pirate ship, and new for this year Baba Yaga. The enormous midway features many activities and refreshments. There is a live band playing, concession stands, gift shop, photo areas and games.
Scenes: The scenes at Woods of Terror are some of the most well-constructed and visually stunning I’ve ever scenes. You can tell that a lot of time and effort when into them and the attention to detail is amazing. They make great use of some pretty impressive animatronics. The actors also have some great hiding spots and you never can tell where they are going to come from. I was especially impressed with the 3D effects in the clown/carnival areas. Eleven’s Nightmare was also well done. The entire mortuary/graveyard area had the best props and scenery of the attraction. I liked the use of Freddy’s glove as the entrance to his area. There were also some very inventive things here such as the falling bridge in the Camp Crystal Lake area. The new Baba Yaga area was very well done and had some amazing visuals and props.
Scenes: 5/5
Costumes: The costumes consisted of a combination of masks and make-up. Each costume fit the area that it was themed for. I loved the make-up jobs on the zombies in the mortuary areas. The actors in Eleven’s nightmare looked like they were straight out of the show. The clowns were unique as were all of the costumes in the mortuary area. The Micheal, Freddy and Jason all looked great. I found the best costumes of this attraction were the ones that were working the crowd.
Costumes: 5/5
Actors: The actors varied with each scene we went through. I loved the energy of all the actors in the clown/carnival sections. They seemed to be having a great time and it really came out in their performances. The actors in Eleven’s Nightmare also had great energy. The actors in the Pirates Cove were my favorite of the attraction. They did a great job of working the crowd. Many of the other areas had actors that just seemed like they didn’t want to be there. They would either just stay in their spot not really doing anything or just seemed like they were tired and didn’t want to be there. Most of the actors in the mortuary area did a great job of working the crowd thought here was one that pretty much ignored everyone. One of the actresses in the Baba Yaga area because rather rude with me at one point.
Actors: 3/5
Crowd Control: I find that large, popular attractions like Woods of Terror often suffer from crowd control issues and during our visit this seemed to be the case. We started out with just our group but withing 5 minutes of entering the attraction it was one giant line going through. This led to missing scares due to actors being out of position. The pacing felt slow in most areas due to the mass amount of bunch groups. The line even stopped completely in the mine area for a period of time. There were entrances to some of the sections where the staff members would ask us how many were in our groups but would just send groups through with little to no space between them. This means that they had opportunities to have some control over the mass groups going through but were still allowing it to happen. There were some areas where our group was alone but this was few and far between.
Crowd Control: 1/5
Atmosphere: I truly love Wood of Terror. You can really tell that the people that run it love what they do and have a passion for the craft. The scenes are stunning and detailed to a point that I’ve rarely seen in a haunted attraction. The costumes really grab your attention and make the scenes pop. The sound design is well done and is at a level that isn’t too loud but keeps you engaged. The problem comes from the glaring crowd control issues. You get plenty of time to enjoy the scenes but you end up missing a lot of the scares due to seeing them happen well before you get there. There is also a problem with some of the actors not putting forth great performances and leaving you thinking they just don’t want to be there. Some sections are amazing. You get great visuals and great energy from the actors. However, the fact that it’s like a conga line going through much of the attraction really takes away from the overall feel of the attraction.
