Greetings and welcome to another edition of The Land Speed Record Department. This month’s show finds Department researchers Nevada Nate and Beta Motive turning their attention to the phenomenon of early DIY synthesiser music, named retrospectively as minimal wave. This particular quirk of early 1980s music took influence from punk’s democratisation of music making and applied to the first wave of commercially available synthesisers and drum machines. A thriving independent cassette tape culture allowed this music to be easily documented and distributed outside of the mainstream music industry. It has been the mission of electronic music historians to comb through flea markets and Discogs deep dives to piece together the bigger picture of these strange, macabre recordings from a forgotten era. Respect must go out to - a leading pioneer in the research of minimal wave music. We hope the Department’s findings may add to your understanding of this mysterious corner of underground electronic music.
