⁉️WHAT GIVES EGGS THEIR COLOR?⁉️
Egg color comes from natural pigments deposited on the 🥚eggshell as it forms in the hen's oviduct.
The breed of the chicken determines which pigments are added.
🤎BROWN EGGS
Colored by a pigment called protoporphyrin.
Common in breeds like Marans, Welsummers and many other heritage breeds.
🩵BLUE EGGS
Colored by a pigment called oocyanin.
Laid by breeds such as Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers.
💚GREEN EGGS
A combination of blue pigment and a brown pigment layered together. Common in breeds like Olive Eggers.
🩷PINK EGGS
Caused by a lighter form of brown pigment.
Often laid by breeds such as Salmon Faverolles and some mixed breeds.
🍫CHOCOLATE EGGS
A very deep brown, rich in pigment.
Most famously laid by Black Copper Marans.
🤍WHITE EGGS
Lack of pigment. Common in breeds like Leghorns, Silkies and Anconas.
