Written by James T. Morehead and James Cassin in 1949, the Ames Brothers' original became a #3 hit that year as the flip side of their even bigger hit, "Rag Mop" - both Russ Morgan's orchestra and Ray Anthony each had their own charting versions the same year too. Elvis cut his own take during that same busy March 12, 1961 Nashville session that produced several other tracks, backed by Hank Garland and Scotty Moore on guitar, for the album "Something for Everybody."

Written by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett, this was actually recorded back in May 1963 at RCA's Studio B in Nashville, as one of several attempts to recapture the sound of his hit "Return to Sender." RCA sat on it for five full years before finally releasing it as a bonus track on the "Speedway" soundtrack in 1968 - despite people often assuming it was written for that movie, it wasn't connected to it at all, just used as filler. It reached a modest #32 on the pop chart.

Elvis cut "Such a Night" on April 4, 1960, at RCA Studio B, part of the session marking his return after two years in the Army. Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters had recorded it first back in 1953, seven years earlier. RCA didn't even release Elvis's version as its own single right away, it sat on the "Elvis Is Back!" album for four years before coming out on its own in 1964, and it still landed Top 20 in both the US and UK that late. A song can wait a long time in an album's shadow before anyone notices it deserved its own release.

Rather than correct the misunderstanding, the two Philadelphia writers leaned into it and wrote him a song for "Loving You." It topped the charts for seven weeks that summer, becoming his third #1 of 1957 - and that Christmas, Elvis donated his entire teddy bear collection to a children's charity rather than keep any of them.
