The U.S. has sharply raised tariffs on India, citing its soaring imports of discounted Russian oil, now estimated at nearly half of India’s supply, as undermining sanctions on Moscow. While Washington says the move is part of a global tariff strategy, India calls it punitive, unfair, and hypocritical, noting that the EU also buys Russian energy without similar penalties and that the U.S. itself continues trade with Russia in minerals. Analysts see a deeper aim: using tariffs as leverage to pull India away from Moscow and closer to the West, positioning New Delhi as a key counterweight to China in the Indo-Pacific.
