Eleven individuals were killed when a gunman opened fire at a dance studio in Monterey Park, California on Saturday night, January 21, as the Asian American community was ringing in Lunar New Year. ⠀
Among the identified victims at Star Ballroom Dance Studio was 68-year-old Valentino Alvero, a U.S. citizen of descent, according to the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles. ⠀

An official statement from the Alvero family, posted by his great niece Karmel Kwan on Twitter, honored his life as someone who “loved ballroom dancing…his community, and was the life of any party.”⠀

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office also identified three other victims on Monday — Mymy Nhan, 65; Lilan Li, 63; and Xiujuan Yu, 57. The identities of additional victims will be released once their family members are notified. Nine individuals remain remain hospitalized for injuries from the attack. ⠀

Police identified 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, as the suspect in shooting in Monterey Park, just miles from downtown Los Angeles, where 65% of its residents are of Asian descent. After opening fire at Star Ballroom Dance Studio, Tran targeted another dance hall in Alhambra, but was disarmed. He was later found dead on Sunday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a Torrance strip mall parking lot, the LA sheriff’s department said. ⠀

Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting.⠀

This is an ongoing story and the Asian Journal will be continuing to share the life of Valentino Alvero and other victims, as well as posting resources on how to help the families of the victims and support the community at this time. | Photo of Valentino Alvero courtesy of Karmel Kwan/Twitter
