How Much You Can Afford To Flush Down the Toilet Monthly.

This is the stupid thinking of MOST business owners. Seriously.

When speaking with business owners (again my niche is primarily financial advisors) I often hear things like "I cannot afford to blow my entire marketing budget on this program" and "Your program costs more than I usually spend on a monthly basis so I cannot afford it"

Yep, that's me being honest. I don't sell my services on being the lowest price. That is STUPID. If you gain a client on price, you will lose them on it as well. Instead, I value my services and program on RESULTS...and you should as well. In addition, you should view your marketing program based on how much money you expect to EARN...not LOSE. If you don't, you have a LOSING mentality, not a WINNING one.

So if I were to work with your business, I want you to view the fee for my programs as an INVESTMENT that will yield returns, NOT an amount of money you can afford to lose. I do get the sentiment though.

It's like going to the casino with $1000. You take an amount that you know you can afford to lose and you don't expect to win...if you do, that is icing on the cake, but more often than not, you will come back with less than $1000 or even $0.

IF THAT IS HOW YOU VIEW MARKETING, YOUR MARKETING PROGRAM SUCKS!

Sound a little harsh? It should be. You see, I have found that those firms that compete on price, can NEVER afford to give you the service and results you are really looking for. They can sign up clients daily because the fees are so cheap...well...so are the results. Quality leads should NOT be cheap. If you are looking for clients who want to give you 50k, 100k, 250k or MORE to manage...how in the heck would you expect to set appointments with dozens of them monthly, for only a few hundred dollars marketing spend!!?? Sounds crazy when you really say it, and you know what? You can't. You know it. You chase these phone numbers and emails like a hamster on a wheel. 20-30 or more leads per month that lead to NOWHERE. Why do you keep doing it???

Because it's cheap.

Listen, a quality marketing program that yields results is not cheap...it is VALUABLE. It delivers specific, quantifiable VALUABLE results...month after month after month. So many businesses focus on AD SPEND and maybe have a true MARKETING BUDGET (which you had better if you don't already) but they fail to track the ROI of anything.

Learn the lifetime value of a client and THEN you can really hone in on what you should be spending on client acquisition. The silliest thing in the world is when a business balks at the idea of spending $500 per client acquisition, when the lifetime value of each client is $5000 or MUCH MORE.

Know your numbers, or they will sink you. We can bring you quality leads, but while the packages aren't CHEAP, the results aren't either. Quality lead generation should be expensive because it is the next best thing to printing money...;-)

Have you ever stopped to consider how big companies become so well-known? While there are many ways in which companies and businesses can become household names, one method that can be extremely effective, is creating a sales funnel.

A sales funnel essentially refers to a process which leads to a potential client purchasing your product or service in a step-by-step fashion. For example, if you see a convincing ad in a newspaper for a new coffee shop in your neighborhood, you may be thinking about them already. Then, later that night, if you see an ad on TV for that same coffee shop, your desire to go try them out is compounded. If you then go to said coffee shop, they may give you a small sticker or fridge magnet with your coffee, so you’ll see their logo every day and think of them.

This can be accomplished in a similar manner online.

You can create an ad on social media, which funnels a potential client to sign up for your email list and encourages them to subscribe to your blog, through which you frequently contact them, and then eventually make the sale. (if the targeting is done well and your ad hits your prospect just as they are ready to make a decision, the sales cycle can be much shorter of course, which is something we specialize in ;-)

At this point, you’ve accomplished the goal: selling your product or service. However, now you may consider “upselling,” or subtly encouraging the client to purchase more, or different services as well (think “do you want that Biggie Sized” in Wendy’s old campaign).

DO YOU PRINT MONEY?

If you have a rock solid marketing team in place, then you damn sure should be!

So many have been hit hard by this pandemic and businesses look for ways to survive and one of the first expenses to go is MARKETING. They figure they will hold on to their existing clients and save the money they spend on marketing.

DUMB!

Now matter HOW AMAZING you and your team may be, clients leave for a variety of reasons. They choose other providers, they changes businesses, they themselves have money issues, whatever. And when your clients leave, guess what? YEP, you have to start marketing again...and when you do, you are starting from SCRATCH. You have to do everything as if you are just starting out because you let your marketing go COLD. It's just...stupid.

You should always have a steady stream of leads coming in, closing some, following up with colder ones, and pre-qualifying horrible ones and putting them aside. And if your marketing program is solid and you outsource it (wink, wink) it shouldn't cost you much time and it shouldn't cost you any money.

WAIT...no money? Well, yes, because if your marketing is WORKING, then for each dollar you spend, you should be making AT LEAST a dollar or more. That return doesn't usually show up immediately depending on the lifetime value of your client, but if your marketing is solid, it should be there absolutely. Otherwise, you are throwing money away. This happens with good old ADS all the time. You pay thousands for a big ad somewhere, it runs, and then nothing. Either the ad sucks, the targeting was off, OR you just didn't track the results (every incoming phone call, email, or message should be tracked as to HOW they go to you...that is the ONLY way to determine ROI...if that sounds like a hassle, then keep moving because you are wasting money and not managing your business properly)

What you must do is ensure your marketing

*hit your target prospects
*shows them the value of what you provide
*encourages them to CONTACT YOU
*follows up with prospects if they don't buy right away
*and allows you to track ROI over time to see exactly how solid your marketing plan really is

BTW...if your #1 criteria for a marketing program is PRICE, then you will often get what you pay for.

Think about this...if a company offers you a complete marketing solution for $2500 per month, and another one offers a program for $5000 per month, which do you choose? Well, based on that info, you should have NO IDEA which one to choose, because the only thing you should care about is IF IT WORKS and IF IT PRODUCES MORE REVENUE THAN IT COSTS! Hell, I don't care if I am spending 10k or more if my return is MUCH higher than that, right!?

So, instead of looking at your marketing budget line item as an EXPENSE, start looking at it as an INVESTMENT, and make sure it performs like one as well. A firm that can handle your marketing for you and produces results will make being business, a hell of a lot easier. Wouldn't you agree?
