๐ I don't know if I'll ever be as honored to shoot a wedding anymore than I was to shoot Dennis and Cheryl's.
Dennis was my boss at while I was at the News-Argus. Not quite like a father, but more of an uncle. I loved hearing his stories and I respected him. I also appreciated that I could also speak freely to him because he understood the stresses of the newspaper business. One day I walked in with a kiddie pool and he made a joke about not asking "Animal" questions, which lead me down a rabbit hole of watching old Lou Grant episodes on YouTube. He was always fun to be around.
Months ago Dennis called me. There was a joy in his voice that I could feel through the phone, a joy that I don't know if I've heard out of anyone before. He told me that he was getting married and asked me if I would take the photos.
You see, Dennis and Cheryl had dated thirty years ago and had reconnected all these years later. Their story isn't linear. They have experienced what it's like to have loved and lost and are now not willing to live without each other.
They were married in a pine tree forest that Dennis planted years ago. Each of their children, now adults, had a special part in the ceremony. They also put together a newspaper to give out to guests at the reception, telling their parents story. The day was special for their entire family.
I worked with Dennis for almost seven years and he trusted my skill and work ethic enough to document their love story. He didn't have to, but he did.
