Approaching a public land duck hunt the right way starts before the sun comes up. In this video, we walk you through how new waterfowl hunters can set themselves up for success by developing a smart early morning approach.

Learn why it’s crucial to:

Arrive extra early to claim your spot and settle in

Scout ahead of time to learn how birds use the area

Consider mock hunts to observe flight paths and feeding zones

Allow Mother Nature to settle before shooting light to avoid spooking ducks

Be mindful of other hunters so everyone has a better experience

Public land hunting isn’t easy—but if you put in the time and respect the process, it can be incredibly rewarding. This video is packed with the kind of tips that make a difference in real-world duck blinds.

Hit that like button, drop a comment if you've got a tip for new hunters, and subscribe for more waterfowl content.

Did you know?
Sitka’s “Optifade Waterfowl” pattern wasn’t designed just to blend into the marsh—it was engineered using scientific research on how ducks actually see. Instead of mimicking reeds or brush like traditional camo, Sitka worked with biologists and animal vision experts to create a digital pattern based on how waterfowl perceive color, contrast, and movement from above.

Because ducks have exceptional vision and see in a different light spectrum than humans—including ultraviolet—Sitka’s pattern was created to confuse the bird’s vision rather than conceal the hunter entirely. The idea is to break up the human outline in a way that makes it difficult for flying ducks to identify you as a threat, especially in wide-open wetlands or flooded fields.

In short: Sitka camo wasn’t made to fool your buddy’s eyes—it was made to fool a duck’s.

Our Take on BOSS Shotshells... Game Changer for Waterfowl Hunters

A couple of years ago, BOSS revolutionized the waterfowl world with their original copper-plated bismuth shells, and they’re still one of my top picks today. These shells hit like a hammer, pattern beautifully, and bring down birds clean—whether you’re shooting teal up close with or stretching it out on big ducks with their 3/5 blends.

Yes, they cost a little more, but the performance speaks for itself. Fewer cripples, fewer follow-up shots, and more time enjoying the hunt. The only tip? Pattern your gun, because BOSS shells shoot more like lead than steel, and a tighter choke often gives the best results.

As of 2025, BOSS Shotshells offer a range of options to fit different budgets and needs. The original copper-plated bismuth Legacy shells run about $2.35 to $2.50 per round, striking a balance between performance and cost. For hunters seeking top-tier power, the premium Warchief bismuth shells are available at around $2.60 per shot. This pricing spread keeps BOSS competitive across the board, providing quality ammunition whether you’re on a budget or after the highest performance.

If you’re looking to level up your waterfowl game, the original BOSS shells are hard to beat. Who else is still running BOSS in the blind this season?

In the early 1900s, southwest Louisiana earned the title ‘Duck Capital of America.’ Towns like Gueydan and Kaplan became legendary as hunters traveled from across the country to experience the unmatched waterfowling in the rice fields and marshes. Our rich hunting traditions were born from this golden era.

Before plastic, foam, and motion spinners, some old-school waterfowlers relied on the real thing—live duck decoys. Birds were kept, cared for, and gently tethered out front so their natural movement, splash, and calling would pull in wary flocks that wouldn’t finish over a spread of carved blocks alone. It was work: feeding, penning, transporting, clipping wings or using light tethers—but the realism was unbeatable, and the stories from that era are legendary. The practice was eventually outlawed under federal migratory bird regulations, so today it lives on mostly in old photos, family tales, and the memories passed down at duck camp.

Did your grandparents, great-uncles, or any old hands you know ever hunt over live decoys? If you’ve got a story—or better yet, a vintage photo—drop it in the comments. I’d love to hear how they did it “back when.”

Duck Blind Delicacy: The Rise of the Christmas Tree Cake

It’s not officially duck season until someone pulls out a box of Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes in the blind.

What started as a sweet holiday snack has become a modern-day duck hunting tradition across Louisiana and beyond. You’ll find them tucked in blind bags, passed around the pit, or balanced on the edge of a thermos full of Community Coffee.

They might not improve your aim, but they’ll sure lift your spirits on a cold, quiet morning. Something about those red sprinkles, that white icing, and a perfect bite of nostalgia just hits different when you're waiting on the next flight.

If you know… you know.

Remembering Macon Fry... Guardian of the Mississippi Flyway

Macon Fry wasn’t your average duck hunter—he was a storyteller, historian, and swamp dweller who chronicled Louisiana’s wild places and the people who lived in harmony with them.

Living off-grid on the Mississippi River batture just outside New Orleans, Fry hunted, fished, and wrote about the vanishing culture of Louisiana’s water-based life. His book, “They Called Us River Rats,” is a heartfelt tribute to the old-school ways that define our state’s duck camps and backwater stories.

While not a famous guide or champion caller, Fry’s voice captured the soul of Louisiana duck hunting—its traditions, people, and changing landscapes.

His words remind us: duck season is more than limits—it’s legacy.
