Are Motion Decoys Losing Their Edge on Public Land Hunts?

In this video, we dive into the ongoing debate about motion decoys on public hunting grounds. When spinning wing decoys first hit the scene, they completely changed the waterfowl world, drawing ducks in like never before. Over time, however, hunting pressure and wary birds have led many hunters to question whether these tools are still as effective as they once were.

We’ll discuss the evolution of motion decoys—from the early days of spinning wings to today’s wide range of options, including water motion devices that create lifelike ripples and movement in your spread. More importantly, we’ll explore how ducks on heavily pressured public lands react to these setups and whether motion still plays a role in success.

We’ll also share some tips on how to adapt your decoy spread, when to use motion (and when not to), and ways to get the most out of these tools in modern waterfowl hunting.

👉 Do you still run motion decoys on public land, or do you leave them at home? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

Is Social Media Killing Public Land Hunting?

In this opinion-driven discussion, we tackle one of the most heated debates in the hunting world — is social media and modern tech the real reason our public hunting lands are becoming overcrowded? From hunting spots being blown up online to GPS apps making once-secret areas public knowledge, we’ll share personal perspectives and hear both sides of the argument. Is it hurting the future of hunting, or is this just the new normal? Join the conversation and share your thoughts in the comments.

Louisiana Waterfowl History: When Canada Geese Filled the Sky

Not long ago, Louisiana’s rice prairies and marshes were the winter home for massive flocks of Canada geese.
From the fields of Cameron and Vermilion to the marshes of White Lake and Lacassine, thousands would migrate down the Mississippi Flyway each year, creating a sight (and sound) no one forgot.

Over time, the migration shifted north.
✅ Agriculture changed—less rice and pasture in the south, more waste grain up north.
✅ Milder winters meant open water and food were available in the Midwest.
✅ Resident goose flocks up north eliminated the need to fly to the Gulf.
✅ Wetland loss reduced prime Louisiana feeding and roosting grounds.

By the late 1980s, the legendary Canada goose winters of Louisiana were mostly gone—a reminder that migration patterns can change quickly when habitat, climate, and food availability shift.

If you ever saw those skies filled with honkers, you witnessed a piece of waterfowl history that may never return.

Pomme de Terre WMA: Decades of Restoration Shaping a Future for Waterfowl

In 2017, Ducks Unlimited partnered with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) to replace aging water-control structures, thereby restoring effective water level management across the WMA. This upgrade enhanced approximately 1,054 acres of wetlands, enabling better seasonal flooding and watercontrol—critical for attracting and sustaining waterfowl populations and improving hunting opportunities.

Why It Matters?

Hydrologic Restoration: By modernizing culverts and control structures, managers regained precise control over water levels—vital for creating the shallow, dynamic conditions favored by migratory ducks.

Habitat Performance: Effective water management boosts wetland productivity (like moist-soil plant growth), drawing in and supporting larger waterfowl groups.

Hunting Impact: Improved habitat stability typically leads to higher concentration and consistency of hunters’ success—making these areas among the more reliable in the region.

Cajun market hunters had a unique way of preserving their harvest. Before refrigeration, they'd use a technique called 'dry-picking' to remove the feathers, which helped the birds last longer in the warm Louisiana climate. They'd also pack the ducks in moss or Spanish moss to keep them cool during transport. It's a far cry from our coolers and ice today! What are some other old-school preservation methods you've heard of?

Gonna share an Old School tactic that my great grandad and grandpaw would do when I was very young: Icing Your Birds in the Blind

Back in the day, especially here in Louisiana, hunters used to bring an ice chest into the blind to chill down their birds as they shot 'em. With warm-weather hunts and long boat rides back to camp, this wasn’t just smart it was essential.

Cooling the ducks quick meant better meat, less spoilage, and some folks even say it helped mellow out the flavor. Some would soak birds in ice water for 24–48 hours after the hunt to clean out blood and "mild out" strong flavors—especially with gadwall or spoonies & divers.

Nowadays, most folks toss ducks in the truck bed or back of the boat…
But we gotta ask:

Have you ever heard of this method? Do you still ice your ducks in the blind—or is that a thing of the past?

8 Seasons Strong: War Eagle 648 LDV DU Edition Review

We’ve run our War Eagle 648 LDV Ducks Unlimited Edition hard for 8 seasons across everything South Louisiana can throw at it — from tight timber holes to salty marsh backwaters — and it continues to impress.

Originally paired with a Beavertail 35hp Longtail, this rig could literally plow through inches of water and thick mud without breaking a sweat. Now running a Go Devil 40hp surface drive, the boat has only gotten better — it corners like a dream, thanks to War Eagle’s winged transom design, making those tight turns in the trees possible and predictable.

What really sets this boat apart: ✅ Durability – This hull has seen it all and just keeps going.
✅ Low Front Deck – Perfect for hunting with a boat blind and keeping a low profile.
✅ 48” Bottom Width – Offers rock-solid stability when moving around the boat, even with multiple hunters and gear.
✅ Versatile Setup – We've run both a Beavertail fold-down blind and a custom-built rig — both work great.
✅ Light but Tough – Easy to maneuver, launch, and handle without sacrificing strength.

⚠️ If there’s one thing we’d change — we’d love to see the transom go full aluminum. While we’ve had zero issues with flex or cracking, and added reinforcement with the big block surface drive, a fully metal build would offer extra peace of mind in today’s market.

💬 In our opinion, the War Eagle 648 LDV is one of the best all-around duck boats available — durable, agile, and made to handle anything from flooded timber to shallow marsh.
