Budget-Friendly Waterfowl Backpack Hack!

The Magellan Camo 24-Can Backpack Cooler doubles as an awesome waterfowl hunting backpack — completely waterproof, rugged, and roomy enough for shells, gloves, snacks, and whatever else the hunt calls for.

We’ve been using this backpack for over a year now, and after plenty of hunts and boat rides, we can confidently say — it’s field tested and highly approved.

On sale now for $79.99, a fraction of the cost of those high-dollar waterfowl packs — and just as tough.

Sometimes the best gear isn’t even in the hunting aisle.

Ever wonder why some duck hunters call spinning-wing decoys “flappers”?

Down here in the South, it’s a slang term some hunters call them by — those motion decoys with the fast-spinning wings that flash like a duck trying to land. But I’ve noticed hunters up north and out west seem to stick with “spinners” or “mojos.”

So now I’m curious…
Do y’all call them flappers, spinners, mojos, or something else entirely where you hunt?
Drop your answer below and let’s see where the regions split!

Beating the Breeze: Louisiana Squirrel Opener on Public Land

We kicked off the Louisiana squirrel season on public land with a tough, windy opener but still managed to put three on the strap. The woods were loud, the squirrels were skittish, but it felt good to be back in the timber for another season of chasing bushy tails. There’s nothing like that first hunt of fall in the Louisiana woods.

Why Cajuns Call Fox Squirrels “Zekes” ?

If you’ve ever spent time in the woods or at a camp down here in South Louisiana, you’ve probably heard someone say, “We got us a few zeekes this morning.” But where did that name come from?

In Cajun culture, fox squirrels earned the nickname “zeekes” generations ago — a bit of old South Louisiana slang passed down through hunting camps and small towns. The exact origin is hard to pin down, but many say it started as a playful nickname for the big, reddish squirrels that always seemed wiser and sneakier than the little gray “cat squirrels.” Over time, “zeke” just stuck — and now it’s part of our outdoor language and heritage.

So the next time you bag a few on a cool October morning, remember you’re carrying on a piece of Cajun history.

In Louisiana, squirrel season isn’t just about the hunt—it’s about the pot! From smothered squirrel over rice to a slow-cooked squirrel gravy in a black iron pot, these traditions have been passed down for generations. It’s more than a meal—it’s family, friends, and a taste of the woods all on one plate. "
