As most of you are aware, Senior Talk Michiana is now a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. The reason for the creation of the non-profit is to enable Senior Talk to reach its full potential and achieve its goal of connecting with a large percentage of the 265,000 seniors in Michiana. This will take a significant amount of funding and support to achieve.

Once a non-profit has been established, the project is no longer owned by the founder but is now controlled by the board. As the executive director, I am now just an employee Please understand that when I created Senior Talk Michiana in March 2024, I was not doing it for myself, but for Senior Service Organizations (both for-profit and non-profit) and all Michiana seniors.

We have now produced 65 podcast episodes and are reaching out to approximately 10,000 seniors (hoping to expand this to 30,000 in the next few months) with an average of 3000 listeners per week. These listeners are tuning in for the full podcast, which lasts about 20 minutes.

Why Is Senior Talk Important?

As a senior himself, Tom realized that he lacked a comprehensive understanding of the various senior services available in the Michiana region. This prompted him to explore the resources that could enhance the lives of seniors in the community. He discovered that many of his peers were also unaware of the vital support systems available to them.

Understanding these services is crucial for ensuring the health and well-being that seniors rightfully deserve. These individuals are not just residents; they are the dedicated teachers who have shaped the minds of generations, the brave police officers and first responders who have safeguarded the community, and the compassionate doctors, nurses, and medical personnel who have tirelessly attended to the health needs of families. Additionally, they include hardworking farmers, factory workers, and local merchants who have provided the food and essential goods that people rely on daily.

These community pillars have given so much throughout their lives, and as they enter their senior years, they must receive the best possible support. To achieve this, they need to be informed about the services, programs, and resources specifically designed to assist them—ranging from healthcare options to social services, transportation assistance, and recreational activities. By raising awareness about these offerings, we can ensure that our seniors not only receive the care and support they need but also feel valued and respected in their golden years.
