This is what I came to the spillway to catch today but this is a baby one. This is the North American Bowfin. Highly underrated and only hated for the way they will wreck your gear if you’re bass fishing and happen to come across one. The first big one I ever caught was on an Abu Garcia baitcaster and it busted the guts out of that reel. Split the casing from the explosion on topwater followed by an immediate burst across the creek. Almost didn’t land it but I fell in love with them that day.

Easy come. Easy go. If you fish topwater, losing fish is probably a common thing for you. It’s part of the game and a part of the challenge that makes landing them that much more exciting.

93 degrees and humid in Owen county Indiana today. Perfect weather for moving 😂 almost have all the boxed stuff moved and using a U-Haul for the furniture tomorrow. After 8 years in this spot I feel like Fresh Prince on the last episode inside this almost empty place. Memories were made but there’s no more room for more. So, in the words of the legendary Robert Plant. It’s time to ramble on.

When a fish explodes on a topwater lure, it's tempting to jerk immediately. Often the fish misses the bait on the first strike. Instead, keep reeling until you feel the weight of the fish on the line, then sweep the rod to set the hook. This can dramatically improve your hookup rate.
Other quick topwater tips:
Fish early morning, late evening, or on overcast days.
Target cover such as w**d edges, fallen trees, docks, and lily pads.
Vary your retrieve speed until you find what the fish want.
Use braided line for better hooksets and lure action.
