📌This is what people don’t tell you about starting over in a new country. 🇵🇭
I moved to the United States 9 years ago with so much hope, two suitcases, a little fear, and a heart full of dreams. I came here to chase my American dream, not knowing how much courage it would actually take just to survive some days. Being an immigrant is beautiful, but it’s also heavy in ways people don’t always see. Some days I’m so proud of how far I’ve come. Some days I’m just tired of having to be strong all the time.
But my story isn’t just mine. It’s the story of so many of us.
First, please be kind. We know we have accents. We know we don’t always sound “perfect.” But we are trying our best to communicate, to express our emotions, and to live our lives in a language that wasn’t our first. An accent just means we speak more than one language. It doesn’t mean we’re less.
Second, we are working just as hard as everyone else. We are not here to take over anyone’s country or take anything away. We are here to build a life, to contribute, to support our families, and to chase the same dreams everyone else is chasing.
Third, kindness is free and hate is not cute. You never know what someone had to leave behind, what they’ve sacrificed, or how much courage it took to start over somewhere new.
I’m sharing this not for sympathy, but for understanding. Behind the smiles, the stories, and the “everything’s fine” posts, there are real people who miss home, who feel small sometimes, and who are still choosing to keep going.
If you’re an immigrant, or if you’ve ever felt like an outsider, this is for you. You’re not alone. And if you’ve ever been shown kindness when you needed it most, you know how much it matters. Let’s choose that. Always. 🤍
