Always rockin' the black and orange in October!

Well Colorado, it's been real, and it's been crazy, and it has also been really crazy! Haha! It was lots of fun too! Flying back home today. And after getting very little sleep in October, I'm planning on some heavy R&R as soon as I get back.

A huge thank you to W***y Tuz of for inviting me out to an awesome event! It was great seeing the cast again!

I have some downtime right now and a pretty long layover in Denver, so I'll be posting more photos throughout today. Orrrrr, I might try to catch a nap or two......

I'd be seriously amiss if I did not acknowledge Indigenous People's Day. My heritage is strong with Lipan Apache, and Taramuhara (Raramuri) culture. I started these feather paintings back in 2006 as a way to connect with my roots, and also to pay respect to those who've come before me. We're all connected. Literally without my great great grandmother, Juanita Gonzalez Castro, a strong Lipan Apache woman, I would not be here.

In 1873, in El Remolino Texas, when she was 7 years old, she lived through a raid by US soldiers where 29 women and children were taken prisoners. Soldiers spent hours burning the village. Some of the children were taken to Carlisle, PA to the Indian school. (Over 10,000 children were taken there and over 2,000 died.) During the raid my great great grandmother hid in the bushes with her 18 month old baby brother in her arms. While he stared to cry, one of the soldiers heard the cry and stuck his bayonett straight into the brush, killing her brother who died in her arms. She continued hiding until no one was left. She escaped and ran until she found several members of our family. From then on it was said that we would never speak of being Apache again. There is even a newspaper from the 1930's that you could see pictures of men holding three heads of an Apache man and two women - Money was still being paid for killing Apaches. This partially explains why my great grandparents generation was not told of our Apache heritage. There were so many more hardships I am aware of that my family endured through those times - and I can't even begin to imagine the strength they must have had. Despite the odds, through her strength, the Lipan Apache culture still lives on, and I am proud.

As my great grandmother Paulita Lozano told that story about her mother, she urged those who heard it to still respect those soldiers but also honor and respect her mom for her strength to survive and get us here. She said with pride - "We are Apache! We are strong!" So today I'd like to honor their memory and sacrifice, and all those that came before me. Because of them, I am.

Hello everyone!!!! I am still working on several special pumpkin projects (ready this March!!), but I have also been taking time the past several weeks to do some traditional Native beadwork. It's one of my favorite forms of art - extremely meditative and meaningful - Lots of time, love and positive energy goes into these. I started these necklaces about a month or two ago and just received a wave of inspiration to finish them.
Fun fact: Back in 2006 I was asked by our tribal chief, Daniel Romero, to take on several large beadworking projects for our tribe.... but I had NEVER done beadworking before!! I didn't even know where to begin. Right in the midst of my polite decline due to not knowing the first thing about producing intricate beadwork, our chief stopped me in mid-sentence and looked straight into my eyes and said, "Beadwork is in your blood.... Look there and you'll remember how to do it." Wow...deep! Well, long story short, I gathered some supplies and sat alone and thought about his words. After some hesitant prep work, I grabbed my needle and beads and awkwardly started my first beaded piece....and the weirdest thing happened. The closest thing I can describe it as was like riding a bike for the first time again after 20 years of walking...it was a little wobbly and uncertain at first, but after a couple of minutes it just starting flowing so naturally... and before I knew it, I was in a rhythm that really did feel like it was pouring from a place of remembrance. A very sweet and powerful experience.

"Warriors in Uniform" This painting was completed on Veteran's Day, Friday November 11th, 2011 (11-11-11). This was a very special painting that was commissioned to me by Chuck Boers, Iraq veteran and current War Chief of our tribe, The Lipan Apache Band of Texas. He wanted a painting commemorating the first known Powwow held in a combat zone. I decided to make a painting that represented past warriors as well as the present. It is hand-painted acrylic on 5 brown turkey tail feathers. Below are 3 modern indigenous warriors, and above they carry with them the spirit of their ancestors - past warriors. At the base of the painting, it is adorned with 2 hawk feathers that were carried in the body armor of veteran Chuck Boers during his combat missions in Fallujah .
From the Lipan Apache Band of Texas website:
"On December 2, 2011 an event was held commemorating the Native Americans serving in the U.S. military since the American Revolution, and by percentage serve more than any other ethnic group in the armed forces. At this event Chuck Boers (Lipan Apache/Cherokee), an Iraq War veteran and the recipient of two Bronze Stars and three Purple Heart medals presented to the Smithsonian NMAI a feather painting by Brandy Davis which commemorated the first known Pow Wow held in a combat zone."

The last photo shows Chuck (left) presenting it to the Smithsonian.

I was so proud and honored to be part of this event. My painting now resides in the archives of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, honoring our Warriors in Uniform.

I just started a brand new Instagram page where I'll be posting all of my Native American and tribal art and also insights into my heritage.
As some of you know, both my heritage and feather painting have been a passion of mine for over a decade now. I've recently begun working on my feather paintings again and LOTS of other Native American and tribal art. I needed a place to post and share it, so the was born. I'll be collaborating on a few projects with some amazing artists and organizations right out the gate. I really can't express how much my heart and passion is set on fire right now. It's so peaceful, yet so full of creative energy...I am loving the feeling.
Since it's a brand new page, I'd really appreciate a follow and support on this old, but renewed endeavor. 🧡 Or please tag someone who loves Native American art! This journey will be a beautiful one. I've been pacing myself posting mostly older work first - but the new stuff will arrive swiftly...the creative fire within is raging. 🧡🔥🧡🔥🧡
Thank you!!
