At approximately 14:30 on Thursday, July 17, the Grand Valley Fire District was notified of a brush fire south of I-70 MM 79, reported to be on a hillside, active flames approximately 12 feet high, with an estimated 1/4 acre burning in heavy fuels. At 14:34 CRFR and DeBeque were mutual aided for wildland engines, Interagency was dispatching their engines and aircraft were being ordered up. Utility 37 arrived in the area to find a fast moving fire in heavy fuels and established Cottonwood (flat) IC. Due to the complexity of the incident, number of homes threatened, and the need for additional manpower/engines, command requested a MAMA response, dispatching mountain area mutual aided departments.

At approximately 15:20 on Monday July 7th ADCOM received multiple calls for a structure fire at 6651 Ho**er Street. Adcom toned a southwest group on the fire to include Westy, ACFR, and Fed Heights. A tall black plume could be seen from across the metro area and being 2 min from 12’s quarters, first due arrived to a working detached garage fire and stretched for an offensive attack with a 2.5”. Engines 1, 13, 14, and Medic 1 operated from Irving Street, while Engine 11, 12, Medic 11, 12, and Truck 41 operated from Ho**er. Battalion 1 took Ho**er IC with Battalion 11 assisting, SAM 11 as the Safety.

At 15:36 this afternoon Truck 1 was dispatched for a motor vehicle fire in the area of 690 South 6th Street. Updates enroute from PD indicated multiple vehicles on fire at the address. Truck 1 arrived to a working fire in the scrapyard with an additional vehicle in the street and requested a structure fire response be filled out with structures exposed. Arriving managed to get a quick knock shortly after arrival.

At 14:22 the Mesa County Fire Authority and the Mesa County Sheriff Wildland Team were dispatched to 3275 C 1/2 Road on reports of an illegal burn, neighbor reporting fire threatening a chicken coop and nearing animals. RP called back reporting the fire was threatening their house prompting a mutual aid response from multiple agencies for an out of control burn.
BR53 arrived on scene of a 5-acre fire moving through low brush and initiated attack.

At 12:21 Engine 3 was dispatched to 820 23 Road on a reported w**d fire. Additional callers on Appleton Lane reported a structure threatened. Based on the notes, Engine 3 upgraded the call to dispatch additional units at 12:24, requesting a Battalion Chief, Brush Truck, Engine, and Water Tender 3. Brush 6 would be diverted to 2396 Appleton Lane for the fire along the road and house. Engine 3 arrived to a working brush fire and positioned for fire attack and structure protection. Additional units arrived and secured the perimeter preventing damage to any houses.

At 13:26 Clifton Fire was dispatched for a w**d fire in the area of 3029 F 3/4 Road. Engine 21 and brush 21 arrived in the area locating a fast moving fire in heavy fuels, moving east towards another field and threatening structures. At 13:33 Engine 21 requested mutual aid from Grand Junction for two engines, followed by an additional request for the water tender from Palisade and Grand Junction Tender 3 & Brush 6. No structures were lost.

On February 8, 2016, Deputy Derek Geer was killed in the line of duty after responding to a report of a man with a gun. Deputy Geer, a Navy veteran, loving husband and father of two, served 15 years with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. As a final act of service and selflessness, Deputy Geer remained on life support until his organs could be donated to four different people.

On this day, we remember and honor his sacrifice and service to our community.

At 9:01 Tuesday morning, the Grand Junction Fire Department was toned for a working structure fire at 1949 N 21st Street with reports of a shed on fire in the backyard. Engine 2 arrived first in with a chicken coop fire spreading to an exposed 2 story outbuilding. Engine 2 pulled a line for fire attack and was quickly assisted by Ambulance 2 and other incoming units. Fire was held to a shed and chicken coop.

Sometime around 10:30 the Glenwood Springs Fire Department was notified of an active natural gas leak in the area of 6th and Pine near Hotel Colorado. A large diameter gas line was hit and it would take several hours to get a clamp in place to secure the line. A perimeter and evacuation zone was established in the immediate area.
