Update (with provided video)

Mason County Sheriff Kim C. Cole released the following information today, along with a video, regarding a series of crimes that led to a dramatic arrest. Deputies responded to a call for a hit and run that escalated into a high-speed chase involving OWI and fleeing and eluding arrest. The incident, which occurred late Thursday evening, concluded after the suspect's vehicle struck a patrol car, bringing the pursuit to an end.

Details from the Sheriff's Department...
At 8:55 PM, on Thursday, 08/28/2025, Mason County deputies were alerted to a hit & run crash that had occurred on Jebavy Drive & Bryant Road, in Mason County’s Pere Marquette Township. It was reported a dark pickup truck had rear-ended another vehicle and fled northbound on Jebavy Drive.

An MCSO deputy, on patrol on Jebavy & Jagger, spotted the suspect vehicle traveling northbound and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect fled at speeds over 100 MPH, weaving back and forth over both lanes, passing several vehicles and bicycles.

At Barnhart Road the vehicle slid sideways, went through a yard and back around the patrol car, and then back southbound on Jebavy Dr. The vehicle fled westbound down Shagway, through Lincoln Road, turned around again and fled back eastbound on Shagway, to Jebavy and then back northbound on Jebavy.

Again, at Barnhart and Jebavy, the vehicle left the road. This time, as the vehicle was attempted to back up, it struck a patrol car.

The suspect, a 21-year-old Hart MI man, was then taken into custody on charges of Hit & Run, OWI and Flee & Elude. The suspect vehicle and patrol car both sustained moderate damage from the crash and the patrol car was not drivable. No injuries were reported

From the Sheriff's Department...
On Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 3:49 PM, emergency crews were called to a vehicle vs. motorcycle crash at the intersection of N. Scottville Road and US31, in Mason County’s Custer Township.

The investigation showed a 2010 Dodge Challenger, driven by a 24-year-old Scottville, MI man, was on N. Scottville Road and had attempted a left turn (southbound onto US31) when he failed to see a northbound motorcycle, operated by a 60-year-old Manistee, MI woman. The driver of the Challenger stated he did not see the motorcycle due to several vehicles that were also northbound on US31 that were slowing to turn right onto N. Scottville Road. The motorcyclist struck the passenger vehicle on the driver’s side.

The driver of the motorcycle received critical injuries in the crash, while the driver of the vehicle reported no injuries.

The case remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team.

Assisting deputies at the scene were members of the Scottville Fire, Custer Fire and Rescue, and Life EMS.

A serious two-vehicle crash in Mason County's Sherman Township on Thursday evening sent three people, including an 8-year-old girl, to the hospital. The incident, which involved a passenger car and a pickup truck pulling a trailer, occurred at the intersection of Sugar Grove Road and Schoenherr Road and resulted in a power outage as well. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the crash and provided these details...

On Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 6:26 PM, emergency crews were dispatched to a serious traffic crash at the intersection of Sugar Grove Road and Schoenherr Road, in Mason County’s Sherman Township.

Preliminary findings suggest a 2025 Chevy Equinox, driven by a 74-year-old female from Jenison Michigan, pulled up to the stop sign northbound on Schoenherr Road at Sugar Grove Road, stopped, and then pulled into the path of an eastbound 2025 Chevy Silverado pickup truck pulling a trailer.

The pickup truck struck the passenger vehicle in the driver side door. Following the crash, the passenger vehicle rolled over and the pickup struck a power pole, bringing down power lines and causing a power outage in the area.

The 74-year-old Jenison woman and her front seat passenger, a 41-year-old Saint Joseph Michigan woman were both critically injured and were transported to a Grand Rapids area hospital for further care. An 8-year-old girl, also in the passenger car was injured and treated at Corewell Hospital in Ludington.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 34-year-old Twin Lake Michigan woman, was also injured and treated for minor injuries.

Neither speed nor alcohol appear to have been a factor in the crash and all occupants were properly restrained.

The case remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team.

Fountain Area Fire & Rescue, Custer Fire and Life EMS assisted at the scene while Mason County VSU assisted at the hospital.

A quick-thinking community saved the day for thousands of petunias after a key piece of equipment broke down. When the Ludington Petunia Parade watering truck broke down and went into the shop for 12 days recently, the flowers that beautify Ludington’s downtown faced a dire situation.

A challenge is simply an opportunity for teamwork. The City of Ludington Fire Department quickly stepped up, sending two firemen to water the flowers on the Avenue in the dead of night. Their dedicated crew worked from 1:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 3, providing a much-needed drenching not once, but twice.

The community group that runs the Petunia Parade also worked closely with the Department of Public Works to ensure the petunias on the Boulevard and at the Marina were cared for using their underground watering systems.

With the Petunia Parade's watering truck now back in service, the flowers are once again on their regular schedule.
