Storytime: my music video premiered in the Top 20 on MTV and I had to wait tables the same day

Last month I had the honor of speaking to the CreativeMornings chapter on the theme of Nakhlah, or Palm 🌴 symbolizing resilience and the ability to weather the storm and stay standing. CreativeMornings Grand Rapids

I spoke about my journey as a freelance creative and how those intersections often converged for me in the most humbling of ways: like how the same day the music video I produced premiered and was in the top 20* music videos on MTV, I had to go wait tables in Hudsonville, Michigan.

No one can take your creative work from you. No matter how many tables you might have to wait in between projects to keep the lights on.

Keep going. If you can’t walk, crawl.

I love when Christopher Kurby takes me away to a cabin for the weekend but I HATE when the bathroom is right near the bed.

Everything, everywhere, all at once.

Honored to have spoken at this month’s CreativeMornings Grand Rapids at The Comedy Project about the theme of Nakhlah, or Palm, which symbolizes resilience and an overwhelming ability to bend and not break. So grateful for the opportunity to speak to my creative community about my journey AND wear this matching set again. Amazing photos by my brilliant friends Eli and Rae for SideCarStudios.

Trigger warning: This marked the first time I’ve publicly spoken about my miscarriage to a room full of people, and I was unsurprisingly overwhelmed with emotion the entire rest of the day. Thank you to CreativeMornings for this opportunity.

You can watch my presentation at the link in the bio.

Since the email went out earlier today I guess the cat’s officially out of the bag: I’m honored to be this month’s CreativeMornings Grand Rapids speaker!

Next Friday I’ll be at one of my favorite places on earth - The Comedy Project - to talk about my creative journey and how I’ve built a career on saying “yes, and” to the curveballs life can sometimes throw.

Special thanks to Derek Mohr: Designer+Developer and the entire CreativeMornings team for this wonderful topic — I can’t wait to be with you all next week.

Registration opens Friday and seating is limited so please be sure to register! See you there? Adobe

Happy Sunday, Instagram-land! Your favorite creative single momma is still on the hunt for her next full time role which means more pieces! This time I’m throwing it WAY back (15 years ago) to when my favorite cosmetics and I made a rap video homage to and her groundbreaking 2010s single “Gucci Gucci” all about the newest product hitting the shelves — their solid toothpaste tabs! We came up with the idea during a staff meeting, spitballed lyrics on the spot and decided to go for it. We recorded the track that Meghan and Nicole wrote in Viola’s apartment, shot the video after the store closed at 6pm on a Sunday, and just went for it.

The end result is widely considered one of the company’s first “viral” videos, was shown at the North American manager’s meeting in Canada that year, and garnered a two-page spread in the UK LushTimes quarterly magazine that season, with placement in all 100 stores across the United Kingdom.

15 years later and I’m genuinely still so proud of this silly little piece. And I think would be too 😂
