The closing reception for the I AM A MAN exhibition was a bittersweet event. The exhibition is so powerful that I hate to see it leave. I hope that you are among the hundreds of people who did witness that amazing portrayal of an incredible time in our history. It comes down tomorrow

Happy heavenly birthday to my grandmother Blanche Waters Blue. "My Blanche. My Blanche. My Beautiful Blanche," her father used to say. It took me a long time to learn that he was talking about his sister and not the daughter he gave the same name. I think I never questioned it because it fit my grandmother to a tee. She was beautiful inside and out. She not only raised her own five children but many others including my mother's five and her niece's daughter. I know we tested her patience because once I got "too grown" and mouthy and she popped me in the head with the broom that I was supposed to be using. Everybody's barber, she also delivered babies, was a landlord and insisted that everyone vote. Then she worked the polls to double check. She made sure we showed up at Willis Chapel AME for everything and she was there working. She was a wonderful gift from God.
