Rational Animal

Rational Animal Rational Animal is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 with the mission of creating media and special events to help at-risk animals.
Rational Animal uses media and special events to raise public awareness of animal welfare issues, including the homeless pet epidemic, animal abuse and neglect, and the importance of humane education for our youth. In 2014 Rational Animal will celebrate 12 years as a 501(c)(3) non profit organization engaging the public and hundreds of volunteers in the New York City area and beyond for the animals that need our help most. Rational Animal created the Gimme Shelter Rock n Rescue Benefit series, the Orange Ribbon for Animals awareness campaign, Mother's Comfort Project beds for animals in shelters, several series of public service announcements, Gingerbread Homes for Animals Holiday Humane Education events and five editions NYC's shelter map, Trails to Tails.

For Earth Day, we recommend you go to the Animal Welfare Institute and write letters to your legislators to help protect the animals. It's easy and so important. #EarthDay

Use AWI's Compassion Index to contact elected officials, sign up for eAlerts, and to learn how much compassion federal legislators show on important animal protection measures.

Celebrating #EarthDay2020 we were so happy our "Adopt Me" vests were in use at Friends of Grass Valley Animal Control Shelter prior to the global lockdown. Our walks at Wolf Creek Community Alliance trail can invite potential adopters this way. Can't wait til we can all go back to walking the dogs at this wonderful shelter again.

Welcome! | Rational Animal Non-Profit Organization

10 Years & 10,000 Homemade Beds & Toys Delivered to New York City Homeless Animals

APRIL 10, 2019 - The non-profit organization Rational Animal is gearing up to again bring volunteers together to sew beds and toys during their Mothers Comfort Project on April 13 in Manhattan. Since the project began in 2009, the group has sewn and delivered over 9,000 beds and toys for dogs and cats in local shelters.* This being their 10th year, they’ve set a goal of reaching 10,000 beds sewn and delivered to homeless animals.

“With thousands of homeless animals in NYC shelters at any given time coping with the stress of the shelter, the emotional confusion and fear, we thought at least we can provide some comfort,” explains Brandt. “Now, 10 years later, we’ve been able to do that for nearly 10,000 animals, homemade beds and toys delivered to shelters with pats and encouraging words for each dog or cat.”

For many years the group rented sewing studios but in more recent years, through their capital campaign to buy their own sewing machines, they now have 12 sewing machines which they can bring anywhere, most recently to the Metropolitan Community Church of New York on 36th St. With each capital campaign donor, a sewing machine displays a plaque dedicated to a beloved animal or friend of animal.

Also in the repertoire of hand-made comfort goods are doggy pull toys that volunteers weave out of fleece and hand-sewn catnip toys.

“We wish we could comfort the millions of animals in need of hope around the world,” Brandt says, “but this is where we begin – and to each dog or cat, a bed, a toy and some love, the healing begins.”

Rational Animal is seeking a team leader to help us manage our sewing events in New York City. With another leader, Maggie, who has been managing these events for 10 years(!) will be able to produce more sewing events serving more animals in need. We are looking for someone with management skills, people skills, a can-do attitude, a team-player able to do some physical work when needed (i.e. drive, pick up sewing machines) and animal lover who can commit to at least a year of volunteering with us. Our Story

We were founded in New York City in 2002 by Susan Brandt to increase awareness and help at-risk animals using media and special events. We have achieved a lot, working with the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals under Michael Bloomberg to air TV spots and posters to promote adoption and spay and neuter; creating Gingerbread Homes for Animals, a holiday event to increase awareness for all animals around the city - domestic, wild and working; creating NYC’s first shelter map; registering the Orange Ribbon to represent at-risk animals with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office; running Mother’s Comfort Project to sew now over 10,000 beds for animals in shelters in NYC, Westchester County and now in Sacramento and Grass Valley, California...soon in Salt Lake City. We are all volunteers working to help at-risk animals. Please support us!

This is our beloved Shetland Sheepdog Pippa. She slipped her collar while going into the vet in Pine Plains, NY. She has been spotted in Ancram and Gallatin. She is just 2 years old. She is sweet and very smart. Her former owner had her voice altered, so her bark is not very loud. She is black with a white beard and there is some brown around her mouth. She has been chipped. If you see her, please call us at 845-546-4347.
