My husband and I were fortunate to draw tickets for America’s 250th Birthday at Mount Rushmore! Tomorrow will be a day of celebration and festivities culminating in what will (hopefully) be the fireworks show of a lifetime.

250 years ago today, our Forefathers passed the Lee Resolution, declaring independence from a tyrant king who subjugated the colonists with brutal tactics and excessive taxation. Because of the courage and strength of these men, we have a nation unlike any other!

The Lee Resolution, also known as "The Resolution for Independence", was the formal assertion passed by the Second Continental Congress on July 2, 1776, resolving that the Thirteen Colonies (then referred to as the United Colonies) were "free and independent States" and separate from the British Empire. This created what became the United States.
News of the act was published that evening in The Pennsylvania Evening Post and the following day in The Pennsylvania Gazette. The Declaration of Independence, which officially announced and explained the case for independence, was approved two days later, on July 4, 1776.

John Adams wrote his wife Abigail on July 3 about the resolution of independence:

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”
