Congrats, Officer Gladwell! Best of luck in retirement. Proud to have you in our community!

Happy Fourth of July. 🇺🇸
Happy Birthday. 🎂
Happy Retirement. 🙏

Check out our full press release below and and let it be said on behalf of our entire community: Thank you Officer Dennis Gladwell for your outstanding contributions to our City! We wish you the very best in retirement.

Service to country, schools and community
Gladwell retiring from De Pere Police Department

DE PERE – The Fourth of July holiday has always carried deep meaning for De Pere police officer, Dennis Gladwell.

For one, that’s the day his life began, and, in some ways, the meaning of all the days to follow were inspired by this act of fate.

“I was always interested in law enforcement since I was a little boy. I was born on the 4th of July and have always said that I was born on that day so I can serve my country,” Gladwell said. “So, I have always worked towards serving my country. And I can proudly say I did it as a Police Officer and as Retired Veteran of the US Navy Reserve as a Commissioned Security Officer.”

It’s only fitting then, that Gladwell, now a Police School Resources Officer, is also wrapping up his journey of service this same holiday week. He officially retires from the De Pere Police Department on Friday, July 5, after 18 years of dedicated service to the City.

“I am just proud to say that I was a police officer, but I know it is time for me to move on in my life and allow others to serve just like I have,” Gladwell said.

Before coming to the De Pere Police Department, he first was a police officer/crime prevention officer with the City of Marinette. He started his law enforcement career there in March 1994.

Eventually, Gladwell transferred to the De Pere Police Department to fill the Crime Prevention Coordinator position.

It was here that he created his most indelible legacy.

“My most memorable moments while serving in De Pere is from working in the schools. I feel that I have touched so many lives in a positive way since I took the job as a School Resource Officer. Nothing makes me happier when I drive through the community and I see some of the students that I have worked with are now productive citizens in the community,” Gladwell said.

Officer Gladwell’s career, in particular, is notable for the profound efforts he put into combating bullying, often reassuring local youth with empathetic stories of his own complex childhood.

In fact, Gladwell’s efforts have been so impactful, he just earned the “The Founder’s Award: Everyday Heroes" honor this spring, bestowed directly from the hands of Frank Shankwitz. Shankwitz is the creator and founding president of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Beyond that, if one were to ask someone about Officer Gladwell and his career, they would likely mention that his partner for his entire career was McGruff the Crime Dog. From there, there are other important roles and accolades: While he was the Crime Prevention Coordinator for the De Pere Police Department, he was also the Vice President for the Wisconsin Crime Prevention Practitioners Association and has a life membership with that organization. He also was a Board of Director for Crime Prevention Coalition of America, which works with the National Crime Prevention Council out of Washington DC.

Now, as Officer Gladwell wraps up nearly two decades of service in De Pere this holiday week, he’s at peace knowing that while his career comes to a close, his influence will live on.

“A special moment for me was being the De Pere Police Explorer Post Head Advisor. During that role I have worked with many high school students who were interested in the law enforcement career and, what makes me proud, is that more than 10 of those students have become Police Officers in Wisconsin and are making a difference in the lives of others as well,” Gladwell said.

We wrapped up an amazing time with Frank Shankwitz last evening with a speaking event at the Walter Theater on the St. Norbert College campus. Frank left a lasting impression with those in attendance. The comments of appreciation were plentiful.

Our CEO, Travis Vanden Heuvel, along with the Honorable Jim Schmidt and Frank, presented the Founders Award to both John Zegers, current Superintendent of the School District of West De Pere, as well as Mayor Josh of Syble Hopp School—John for his years of service to students in the community, and Josh for his amazing personality, strength, and ability to spread such a positive attitude in any room he walks into.

Frank also got to meet two Wish Children—Lily and Logan. Frank reminded them both that even when they are 50 years old, they will always be “Wish Children.” They each got to take a turn wearing Frank’s iconic cowboy hat.

Frank—On behalf of Tracy, Travis, Maria, David, and the entire team at TitleTown Publishing, thank you. Thank you for being with us the past number of days. You’re an inspiration to so many, and we’re proud to have had you in our community and on our team. We look forward to continuing to work with you.

We’ve had a busy morning with Frank Shankwitz on his last day in town!

Frank was interviewed by Shotgun and Charli on Y100 WNCY.

He then got a tour of the Brown County Sheriff's Office and got to meet more of Tracy Ertl’s blue family.

Frank then took in the sites around Lambeau Field, followed by a visit with some of the staff at Ecumenical Partnership for Housing - EPH in Green Bay.

He then wrapped up his morning at Willow Tree in Green Bay, where he presented Kristie Sickel with the Founders Award for her contributions to the children in our community.

One last chance to see Frank speak TONIGHT at the Walter Theater on the St. Norbert College campus—free admission! Come on out!

Happily Ever After Animal Sanctuary, Inc.

Frank Shankwitz, the co-founder and first president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Foundation, is in Green Bay now through Tuesday 5/14.

Frank's message is simple...Everyone can be a hero, give back to your community, turn negatives into positives, and don't feel sorry for yourself. Such simple words, but profound if you live by them!!

On Friday, HEA had the opportunity to see Frank engage with the team at WBAY TV-2. That conversation was followed by a visit to WLUK-TV FOX 11 for a chat with Robert Hornacek FOX 11 as a part of his CW 14 Focus program which will air on Sunday. The day concluded with a special presentation at St. Norbert College where Frank took his guests on a journey and reflection about how Make-A-Wish came to be.

The Wish Man Movie (capturing the story of Frank's legacy) will release in select theaters in June 2019, but not before Frank's book is released by TitleTown Publishing and Frank addresses the class of 2019 at SNC!

Get out and see Frank while he's in Green Bay at various events throughout the community! All complimentary to the public.
