GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Human Rights Commission has announced their awardee for the 2024 Human Rights Award. Larry Thomas of the Unhoused Community Committee is being recognized for his work with unhoused populations, effectively understanding needs and connecting them with resources. GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Franklin Regional Council of Governments, FRCOG, developed a Road Safety Action Plan for Franklin County with recommendations for reducing fatal and severe injury crashes through roadway improvements and education. The top locations for severe and fatal accidents are concentrated around the major roadways of Route 2, I-91 and Routes 5&10 where FRCOG is suggesting intersection treatments and pedestrian, bicycle treatments.

MONTAGUE, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The town of Montague reached a milestone this month in Strathmore Mill Cleanup project with the successful removal of the pedestrian foot bridge, a preparatory step in the broader site cleanup plan which is expected to be completed by 2027. In the coming months, Tighe & Bond will continue on-site inspections, coordinate with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the Massachusetts Historical Commission, and further develop construction documents for review.

DEERFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — This Wednesday, Deerfield residents will gather at Frontier Regional School for a Special Town Meeting to vote on several measures. In the meeting warrant there is a vote on funding $638,000 in Capital Improvements for the current fiscal year. The plan includes $325,000 to fund the purchase of a new ambulance, $83,000 for two other vehicle replacements, a $50,000 sidewalk replacement plan and an architect for the Police Garage project. The town will also be voting on funding $75,550 for increased insurance costs.

Michael Visniewski, currently a lieutenant with Leverett Fire and also serving as Deputy Fire Chief in Amherst, will be stepping into the role, pending negotiations, after former Chief Brian Cook left the position in June. In the interim, Amy Rice has been serving as the acting Fire Chief.
