🔥Timber Fire Daily Update: September 9, 2026.🔥

25,380 Acres, 27% and 1,580 firefighters assigned.

Current Situation: The primary focus remains on extinguishment using direct and indirect methods including mechanical and hand lines as well as air resources. Crews are staged along Highway 1 prepared to provide initial attack and respond to any type of flare up or spot fire that might occur as moisture in vegetative fuels is extremely low and flammability increases.

The Timber Fire remains active but has shown little to no growth over the past several days. The majority of the remaining heat lies in deep drainages of heavy timber that are nearly unreachable on foot and unsafe for firefighters. As crews took direct attack where they could in both the South Fork of Little Sur Creek and Pick Creek areas, helicopter water drops remained essential in holding the fire in its current footprint.

Along the northern and eastern ends, firefighters are evaluating and improving completed line from Los Padres Reservoir to Chews Ridge and down to Arroyo Seco. The primary potential for growth is focused to the east where the only viable terrain to place containment lines is 5 to 8 miles from the fire because of inaccessible and difficult to access terrain. Primary containment lines are in place and crews are improving and reinforcing them.

Weather & Air Quality

A Heat Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service effective today through 10 p.m. Thursday. This will cause heat sources on the Timber Fire to rekindle and increase smoke production with the potential for moderate fire activity after several days of quieter fire behavior.

Lighter winds are keeping smoke lower and closer to the fire area. Expect good to moderate air conditions for Carmel Valley, Fort Hunter Liggett, and Paso Robles.

Road Closures: Drivers are encouraged to drive cautiously as traffic is increased because of fire activity and the potential for rocks and debris to fall to the roadway as a result of post fire effects on the landscape.

Highway 1 remains closed between Kirk Creek Campground (Post Mile 16) to just north of Gorda (PM 10.5).

Today is the one month anniversary of . It started on the first day of the Car Show at Timber Top Campground and initial response was showed because of traffic and a lack of accommodations for firefighters. The first command base camp to fight the fire was in King City, a two hour commute to the flames. Now 1,600 personnel, many staged at Andrew Molara and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Parks in Big Sur, are on the fire. It is 27% contained after burning about 25,000 acres. Big Sur businesses, which reopened Thursday, have been forced to close at least 14 days during the fire. Excuse the pun but Big Sur is not yet out of the woods. Temperatures tomorrow are expected to reach 93 in Big Sur. There is concern among firefighters that there can be flare ups.
