I recently asked people here to share cleaning damages they’ve experienced from products, and the responses were eye-opening. These are some of the most common product-related damages that came up.

Easy-Off on blue or colored porcelain ovens
Oven cleaners are extremely alkaline and corrosive. On colored porcelain interiors, they can permanently discolor or strip the finish.

Magic Erasers on stainless steel
Magic Erasers are micro-abrasive. They can remove the protective layer on stainless steel, leaving dull spots, scratches, and streaking.

Magic Erasers on painted surfaces
Magic Erasers don’t clean paint they remove it. Flat, satin, and even semi-gloss paint can be damaged very quickly.

Toilet bowl cleaner on stainless steel sinks
Toilet bowl cleaners are acidic and designed for porcelain only. On stainless steel, they can cause etching, pitting, and permanent staining.

Toilet bowl cleaner on grout
Toilet bowl cleaner can break down grout, weaken the seal, and cause discoloration over time. It may look clean at first, but repeated use can lead to crumbling or uneven grout lines.

Bleach on stainless steel sinks
Bleach can cause corrosion, spotting, and discoloration on stainless steel, especially if it’s left to sit or not rinsed thoroughly. Over time, it can permanently damage the finish.

Multipurpose cleaner on wood tables
Many multipurpose cleaners are not safe for wood. They can strip protective finishes, dry out the wood, and cause dullness or discoloration over time.

Isopropyl alcohol on wood tables
Isopropyl alcohol acts as a paint and finish stripper. It can quickly break down wood finishes, causing whitening, streaking, or bare spots.
