I used to avoid checking my budget after a week where I knew I had spent more than I planned. In my head, if I didn’t look at the numbers, I could pretend everything was fine for a little longer.

The problem is, the numbers don’t freeze just because we’re avoiding them. They keep doing what numbers do, and eventually you have to look anyway.

I wish I could say I ignored my budget because I was having so much fun spending money, but honestly, I ignored it because I didn’t want to know how bad things were looking. Sometimes looking at the numbers feels overwhelming, especially when you already know you’ve been spending more than you planned.

The funny thing is, the numbers were there whether I looked at them or not. All avoiding them did was make me more anxious every time I opened my banking app.
