This is absolutely incredible! Musicologist Dr. Elena Vance spent a decade translating and reconstructing orchestral scores written by anonymous Black composers in the early 1800s whose works were hidden away in private plantation archives. Her dedication culminates this weekend as a full symphony orchestra performs these masterpieces for the very first time in history at the Lincoln Center. Elena had to piece together fragmented sheet music that had been water-damaged and torn apart to preserve the original melodies. Did you know our ancestors were composing full orchestral symphonies during that era?
