Finally punched my first tag of 2025 and it is a SPECIAL one!
The “R” Buck lived on a permission piece close to the house that our dogs have been staying on during a home renovation. With all of the traffic going in and out, and our dogs living in the center of the property, I didn’t expect a big buck to be hanging around, much less on a consistent basis. After a full summer of running trail cameras with little promise I almost wrote this property off. Then, in early October, this Buck showed up on the and it was game on!
Trying to chase a big buck while simultaneously driving in and out of the property multiple times a day was an interesting dynamic; sometimes painful knowing he could be right there. But these deer seemed to be used to regular activity and it ended up playing into our advantage. and I would only make trips in and out during the right times, hoping not to bo**er him up too bad (even though she thought I was crazy)!
This buck was very special because McKinley was fully invested in this buck as much as I was! She saw him one morning as she was letting the dogs out and she said “I saw our buck!” So from then on, he was named a the “R” Buck!
Over the course of October and November, I hunted hard; probably harder than I ever have bouncing from Oklahoma, to Kansas, and Illinois. I felt so close on several occasions, and even have had a couple opportunities, but it hadn’t come altogether for me. Yesterday we finally had the right wind to go after The “R” Buck, so after church I slipped into a tree with in hand. About 20 minutes before dark, a couple does started working their way out of the bedding, and I had a gut feeling he would be right behind them. Sure enough, out he came working right to me! He came in quick, coming in to 20 yards! After a little choas and two shots later (you’ll have time watch the video for this one) The “R” buck was finally down!
The best part of the whole night was being able to experience the recovery with my wife. We have never shared a recovery together, so to bring able to share that moment is something we will cherish forever!
