What a season in Kansas! Everything finally came together on a cold December evening.

I have been playing the long game in Kansas, hunting hard since mid-September. We had several solid bucks on our minds this year, but it proved to be a tough season. A predominantly warm fall made mature buck movement sporadic and nothing seemed to stick much to a pattern. The strategy was to get in their general area and put a lot of time in the woods and that we did! Over the course of October and November, we had SEVERAL great hunts and encounters with some awesome bucks; yet it never all fell completely into place.

As December rolled around, it was time to change gears. There were a few mature, management bucks that were running the Wooly Grass farm, so I decided to take the first opportunity at one of these old bucks that presented a shot. With cold weather finally in the forecast, the December cold front delivered a few of the best hunts of the year with deer on their feet. After 4 straight hunts of steady action and encounters, this 10 point came into the food plot, this time in range of the and I finally released an arrow. Unfortunately, my shot was a little further back than I wanted, so I decided to let him lay overnight just to be safe. I was confident it was center-punch liver, but called in a dog the next morning to assist in the track. After Marley picked up the trail, she took us right to the end of the steady blood trail only going about 115 yards. Unfortunately, the coyotes beat us, but it’s still a blessing to close the chapter on a long and trying season in Kansas.

Finally punched my first tag of 2025 and it is a SPECIAL one!

The “R” Buck lived on a permission piece close to the house that our dogs have been staying on during a home renovation. With all of the traffic going in and out, and our dogs living in the center of the property, I didn’t expect a big buck to be hanging around, much less on a consistent basis. After a full summer of running trail cameras with little promise I almost wrote this property off. Then, in early October, this Buck showed up on the and it was game on!

Trying to chase a big buck while simultaneously driving in and out of the property multiple times a day was an interesting dynamic; sometimes painful knowing he could be right there. But these deer seemed to be used to regular activity and it ended up playing into our advantage. and I would only make trips in and out during the right times, hoping not to bo**er him up too bad (even though she thought I was crazy)!

This buck was very special because McKinley was fully invested in this buck as much as I was! She saw him one morning as she was letting the dogs out and she said “I saw our buck!” So from then on, he was named a the “R” Buck!

Over the course of October and November, I hunted hard; probably harder than I ever have bouncing from Oklahoma, to Kansas, and Illinois. I felt so close on several occasions, and even have had a couple opportunities, but it hadn’t come altogether for me. Yesterday we finally had the right wind to go after The “R” Buck, so after church I slipped into a tree with in hand. About 20 minutes before dark, a couple does started working their way out of the bedding, and I had a gut feeling he would be right behind them. Sure enough, out he came working right to me! He came in quick, coming in to 20 yards! After a little choas and two shots later (you’ll have time watch the video for this one) The “R” buck was finally down!

The best part of the whole night was being able to experience the recovery with my wife. We have never shared a recovery together, so to bring able to share that moment is something we will cherish forever!

Illinois views 🍂

Coming down to the wire here ! We’ve had a great trip with a lot of action, but the matute bucks have been mostly locked down making filling a tag tough. We have a good plan going into the last couple hunts, hopefully we can pull off some last minute magic!

Hunting November is a funny thing. Mature bucks are moving but you have to happen to be at the right place at the right time. You can have perfect conditions at the perfect time, and not be in HIS way.

Thats how the last couple weeks have gone for me. I feel like I’m in the game, but it hasn’t come all together. Things are happening right, just haven’t had the right deer at the right time.

This little dude however, did the right thing at the right time. It is so awesome seeing these animals do their thing. Now it’s just a matter of time before a biggun does the same thing! Keep after it!
