In Darlington, South Carolina, Nucor Steel produces “green steel,” made without the toxic emissions from blast furnaces.

New Article Alert 🚨

While the term "additive manufacturing" may not be familiar to the average person, some of the products of this new technology are already present in our day-to-day life.

Dental care items like Invisalign and crowns, athletic shoe inserts, hearing aid shells – all are being made using additive manufacturing also known as 3D printing. And in South Carolina, companies like Boeing, BMW, and Volvo USA are regularly using the process as they manufacture planes and automobiles.

While conventional manufacturing typically involved cutting material away to make objects, additive manufacturing uses lightweight layers to create, offering less waste in production.

Used at Boeing's 787 Dreamliner final assembly plant in North Charleston, the company's additive-manufactured contributions include production tools and interior pieces of the aircraft, such as ducts. The airline's research and technology center also explores advancements in "next generation" manufacturing including additive manufacturing and 3D printing.

New Article Alert 🚨

The technical college system has a presence in all 46 South Carolina counties, and it serves around 140,000 students each year, said Tim Hardee, Ph.D., the system’s president.

“When the state attracts a company to come here, part of the incentive package is training their workforce,” Hardee said in a recent interview. “We, as a state, historically provide water and sewer and land and whatever that looks like for a business coming to the state, but increasingly, having a skilled workforce is part of, ‘Why would I come to South Carolina instead of some other state?’ So our readySC division of the technical college system is essentially the entity that provides that. We work hand-in-hand with Commerce to be able to have that skilled workforce.”
