Are you curious about locations where elk sightings can occur at close proximity?

We will provide the information, but first, it is essential to note that these magnificent creatures are protected, and strict guidelines must be followed, including refraining from feeding them.

➡️ Cataloochee Valley in the southeastern section of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Located between the charming towns of Maggie Valley and Waynesville.

Elk Watching
Your safety should be your top priority when Elk watching. Elk are wild animals and there are no boundaries or barriers keeping you and the Elk separated. Federal regulations require that you DO NOT approach an Elk within 150 feet.

Best Time for Elk Viewing
Sunrise and Sunset
During these times they will come out to the open fields to graze.
*Other times: cloudy summer days and before or after a storms occur in the region

Elk Viewing by Season
• Calving Season: May thru June
The cows (female Elk) hide their calves in the tall grassy fields. Stay out of the fields for your own safety. By late June calves should be up and moving.

• Growing Season: Summer
The herd can often be seen grazing in the fields. Bulls are in "velvet," rapidly growing new antlers.

• The Rut: Fall
The mating season for the Elk occurs from mid September through the end of October. You may witness antlered bulls bugle and fight for domination and the right to breed with the cows. This can be a DANGEROUS time for visitors.

• Winter
Herds may retreat to the woods and may not be seen in the fields for weeks.

🚩Directions
From Greenville take Hwy25N into North Carolina to I26. Once in Asheville you will merge onto I40W.
On I40W get off exit 20 (Hwy 276) Take the first road to your right, Cove Creek Rd. Several miles up you will turn right onto Cataloochee Entrance Rd.

While you are in the area make sure to soak up some History.
• Palmer House
• Palmer Chapel Methodist Church 1898
• Hiram Caldwell House (Caldwell Place) 1906
• Jim Hannah Cabin 1864
• Little Cataloochee Baptist Church 1889
• SD Cook Cabin
• Woody House
• Beech Grove School 1901

Enjoy your adventure.

Hurricane Creek
Western NC

Easy - Moderate
This depends on the trail conditions and upkeep.

From Greenville (SC) take Hwy 25n into North Carolina. You will continue on Hwy 25 till you merge onto I-26. In Asheville you will merge far left around exit 31B to I-40w. Hurricane Creek trail will be on your right past Haywood Rest Area and after mile marker 8.

PLEASE READ NOTES

If you are not familiar to where this entrance is located it can be tricky to spot if you are doing highway speeds. So we strongly suggest you Google Hurricane Creek Rd and get familiar with the entrance.

If you're going with a group we suggest that you all meet up at Haywood Rest Area and ride together in the right lane at the speed limit but with at least 1 car space in between you and the Jeep in front of you to allow time for each Jeep to slow down and turn onto the trail. Everyone should use their right turn signal at least 1/2 mile prior to turn to signal to high speed traffic coming up behind the group. Be very cautious of 18 wheelers at high speeds.

We also suggest if your group is more than 10 to go in smaller groups from the rest area to cut back on risks and plan to meet up with the entire crew on the trail at the cabins.

Do all you can to avoid any traffic congestion just to get on this trail.

You can also access this trail by coming in from the other side by getting off exit 7 Harmons Den. However, most enjoy the trail by running it from the highway entrance.

Pinnacle Mountain
*Added option to include Dupont Forest & Ceasars Head
Zirconia / Tuxedo (NC)

Directions: The best way to get to this area from your starting point is to Google Roscos in Zirconia, NC. This is great family own and operated store with an amazing food truck stationed on site.
However they are closed on Sundays but you can still fuel up with a card.

Leaving out of Roscos take a right onto Green River Rd. This road will run into a dirt road. Once on the dirt road you will turn right onto Pinnacle Mountain Rd at Blue Ridge Baptist Church.

Pinnacle Mountain is stock friendly with some mud holes but can be avoided for the most part.
There's one main area with some off camber fun but keep in mind this is private property so choose wisely.

Before the dirt road ends you have the option to
1. Turn around and go back down the way you came in.
2. Follow straight on to pavement that will lead you back to Old Hwy 25 passing by the ever so popular
Sky Top Orchard or prior to the orchard you can turn right onto Cabin Creek Rd and it will take you back to Green River Rd. (Stop sign go left back towards Roscos)
3. Travel down to Dupont Forest - Ceasars Head by turning left on Sky Valley Rd. At the end of Sky Valley Rd turn left onto Dupont Rd. / Staton Rd.
On this route you can stop by Ho**er Falls, Dupont Forest and Triple Falls, NC. There's a parking area
and one must hike to the Falls. Great spot for a picnic. Continue on down Staton Rd at the end go left on Cascade Creek Rd. til you come to the end. Turn left onto Greenville Hwy (276 / Geer Hwy). This will lead you back in South Carolina and by Caesar's Head, SC. Stop by for some breath taking views and don't forget to stop at Bald Rock Heritage Preserve.

From here GPS your way back home 🏡

Safe travels and enjoy the journey.
