The South Carolina EMS Association (SCEMSA) would like to address recent developments regarding the EMS education programs at Greenville Technical College. Our team has met with the leadership of Greenville County EMS along with the State Technical College Systems Office to better understand the impact of the recent decision. We can confirm that Greenville Technical College has discontinued its paramedic associate degree and certificate programs. Additionally, they are transitioning their EMT program to their Corporate and Continuing Education division, with Greenville County EMS providing instruction.
We want to clarify that SCEMSA was not consulted or involved in these decisions. While we support a wide range of educational pathways, we do not have authority over the program offerings of Greenville Technical College or any other technical college in South Carolina.
SCEMSA fully supports a variety of educational pathways, including both degree and non-degree programs, to prepare individuals for careers in EMS. We recognize the importance of accessible and cost-effective education in addressing workforce shortages. The SCEMSA is evaluating mitigation strategies to account for the new developments in the Greenville service area and will continue to support innovative ways to ensure that everyone has a pathway to education that meets their respective needs.
Our mission is to improve EMS in South Carolina through advocacy, collaboration, and education. We are dedicated to ensuring equitable access to quality EMS education and adequate staffing across all EMS systems. This includes addressing funding coverage to make education accessible for all. By working with educational institutions, employers, and state agencies, SCEMSA aims to provide high-quality, inclusive training opportunities that strengthen the EMS workforce statewide.
