🏈 Remembering Houston Legend Earl Thomas (1948 – 2020) 🏈
He grew up in Greenville and attended Greenville High School, and graduated in 1967 before heading to college. Earl was one of three brothers from Greenville who made it to the NFL. His older brother Jimmy Thomas played for the 49ers, and his younger brother Mike Thomas was a Pro Bowl running back for the Redskins.
Earl Thomas (1948–2020) was a versatile athlete who made a lasting impact both on the gridiron and in his community. After starring as a tight end for the University of Houston Cougars, he transitioned to wide receiver in the NFL after being drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 6th round of the 1971 draft. Over a six-season professional career that included stints with the Bears, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Houston Oilers, Thomas proved to be a dynamic playmaker.
He racked up 1,08 passes for 1,651 yards and 14 touchdowns, highlighted by a thrilling 82-yard kickoff return for a score. Following his football career, he successfully transitioned into the petroleum industry as a businessman in Houston and dedicated his time to mentoring the next generation as a youth track and field coach.
From the college gridiron to the NFL and back to the heart of the Houston community, Earl Thomas lived a life defined by passion, versatility, and giving back.
Most people know him for his incredible 6-year career in the NFL. After dominating as a tight end for the University of Houston, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1971 and successfully made the switch to wide receiver. Whether he was playing for the Bears, the St. Louis Cardinals, or coming back home to suit up for the Houston Oilers, Earl was a weapon on the field.
He finished his professional career with 108 receptions, 1,651 yards, 14 touchdowns, and an unforgettable 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown! 💨
But Earl’s legacy didn't stop when he hung up his cleats. He settled right back here in Houston, transitioning from the football field to the boardroom as a successful businessman in the petroleum industry. More importantly, he invested his time and heart into the next generation, coaching youth track and field and inspiring countess kids to chase their own dreams.
