Featured Warrior of the day: Datcher

This one is personal to me, this is my Godson! 💙Here’s a snippet of his undiagnosed journey from his amazing mama Dani Roberts Hamby!

———Datcher has an eye condition that doctors still can’t fully explain.

When he was just four years old, he began complaining of pain in his eye. Appointment after appointment, we were told it was likely allergies or that he simply wanted glasses because his friends had them. But the pain never went away.

For four long years, he continued to suffer until one day he walked into an appointment and quietly said, “I can’t see out of my eye.”

We thought he might just need glasses. Instead, that day changed everything.

What followed was a devastating even more painful journey: a retinal repair, emergency surgery, eye hemorrhage, swelling, glaucoma, and then the heartbreaking realization that he would never regain vision in that eye, two more years of relentless pain, and ultimately the loss of his eye altogether.

Even now, we are still searching for answers. We continue to meet with genetics specialists, hoping to understand what caused this and whether his remaining eye could be at risk.

Through every appointment, every surgery, every setback, and every unknown, Datcher has shown a strength far beyond his years. While the journey has been filled with challenges, fear, and heartbreak, he has faced it all with incredible courage.

He is resilient. He is brave. He is an inspiration.

He is a warrior .

Featured warriors of the day are sweet sisters Allie Mae & Sadie! Here’s a snippet of their story from their beautiful mama Lauren Hedler!

———Our daughters, Allie Mae and Sadie, both have Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia.

Allie Mae was in the NICU back in 2021 for newborn congestion (runny nose, bubbly breathing, coughing, ear problems). We were in the hospital for 2 weeks until they finally discharged us saying, “She’ll grow out of it.” Years went by, we did many allergy tests, immunology blood tests and no one was able to find out what was wrong. We would always tell her teachers and friends, she wasn’t contagious! This was a very hard time, especially with COVID still being so big. It was very disheartening.

Fast forward 4 years and I became pregnant with our girl, Sadie. At my anatomy scan, the doctors sent us to MFM to get another ultrasound since they couldn’t see parts of her heart. Sadie ended up having a heart defect, Transposition of the Great Arteries and situs inversus totalis. Our cardiologist asked about Allie Mae and why she was in the NICU? I explained to her our situation with her congestion and she said “I will bet both of your girls have something called PCD”.

Lo and behold, after multiple genetic tests, we found out that BOTH of our girls have PCD. Sadie’s heart defect and situs inversus totalis came from the PCD. So Allie Mae was the 50% that has PCD without a heart defect and Sadie is the 50% who has the heart defect AND PCD.

The girls are both now seeing infectious disease pulmonologist doctors. We do chest PT, vest, nebulizers, antibiotics daily! Sadie will be 1 in September and Allie Mae will be in Kindergarten in the fall. We are so blessed to have amazing doctors and supporters of our girls! 💙
