The Science of Muscle Growth (Hypertrophy)
Muscles grow through damage: When you lift heavy weights, you create microscopic tears in your muscle fibers (micro-trauma). The actual muscle growth happens later, when the body repairs these tears, fusing muscle fibers together to form new protein strands (myofibrils) that are thicker and stronger.
Progressive overload is essential: To keep building muscle, you must consistently force your muscles to work harder than they are used to. This is done by gradually increasing the weight lifted, the number of repetitions, or the frequency of workouts.
The "Pump" is real: The temporary swelling of muscles during a workout (the "pump") is caused by blood rushing into the muscle to deliver oxygen and nutrients while clearing out lactic acid. While it feels great, it is temporary and different from actual long-term muscle tissue growth.
Sarcoplasmic vs. Myofibrillar hypertrophy: Bodybuilders often train in ways that maximize sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (an increase in the fluid within the muscle cell, creating a larger appearance), whereas powerlifters focus more on myofibrillar hypertrophy (an increase in the actual contractile fibers, creating denser, stronger muscle).
