SUNDAY MAY 17, 2026

A severe band of thunderstorms will move into the area from the west this evening, bringing the potential for a couple of tornadoes and scattered damaging wind gusts of 60-80 mph.

A few embedded supercells may develop across southwestern portions of the watch area, which could also produce large hail and isolated tornadoes. As storms push east overnight, the threat is expected to transition primarily into damaging straight-line winds, though a brief embedded tornado risk may continue.

📍 Tornado Watch Area:
Approximately along and 70 miles east and west of a line from near Fort Dodge, Iowa, to south of Lamoni, Iowa.

⏰ Timing:
Storms are expected to intensify this evening and continue through the overnight hours.

🌪 Main Threats:
• Damaging winds up to 80 mph
• Isolated tornadoes
• Large hail possible in stronger supercells
• Dangerous overnight severe weather

Please stay weather aware tonight, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared to take shelter quickly if warnings are issued

Heads up, Central Iowa — we’ve got an active setup and multiple rounds of severe weather are on deck starting TODAY.

🟠 ENHANCED RISK (Level 3 of 5) is in place, mainly north of Highway 92, so if you’re in that zone, stay weather-aware this evening.

⏰ TIMELINE:
Storms are expected to fire up around 5 PM in northwestern Iowa, then track southeast through the evening and overnight, lingering into early Saturday morning.

💥 MAIN THREATS:
• Damaging winds up to 75 mph (primary concern)
• Large hail up to 2”
• A brief tornado or two 🌪️

⚠️ There is still some uncertainty on how far west the strongest winds will push, but ANY storm that becomes severe could quickly turn dangerous.

Heads up, Iowa… this one has our full attention.

Severe storms are expected to fire up Tuesday afternoon and roll through into the night. Eastern Iowa is in the hot seat for the most intense activity.

💥 WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
• Baseball+ size hail possible
• Damaging winds that could knock things around quick
• Tornado threat—including the potential for strong (EF-2+) tornadoes

⏰ TIMING:
Storms likely spark after 3 PM, with the atmosphere primed for things to ramp up fast.
🔥 Peak danger window: Late afternoon through the evening

⚡ STORM MODE:
• Early storms = more isolated → higher tornado + giant hail risk
• Later storms = likely line out → widespread damaging winds + spin-ups embedded

BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM SUNDAY TO 7 AM CDT MONDAY

🌧️➡️❄️ Precipitation Timeline:
• Sunday morning will likely start as rain across much of Iowa.
• As temperatures fall, precipitation will transition to a wintry mix, which could produce a light glaze of ice in some areas.
• Colder air will then move in, changing precipitation over to all snow.

❄️ Snow Potential:
• Widespread snowfall is expected across Iowa.
• Northern and eastern Iowa could see 6+ inches of snow.

💨 Wind Will Be the Biggest Impact:
• Wind gusts of 55–65+ mph are possible.
• These powerful winds will cause significant blowing and drifting snow and dangerously low visibility.

🚗 Travel Concerns:
• Travel conditions may rapidly deteriorate Sunday afternoon through Monday morning.
• In parts of northern and eastern Iowa, travel could become very dangerous or even impossible at times due to near-blizzard conditions.

OUTDATED The first round of storms is expected late Thursday night, with a chance for isolated large hail. Another round may develop late Friday afternoon through early Friday night across parts of Iowa, when the threat for severe thunderstorms increases. All hazards will be possible, including damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.

Jasper and Poweshiek Counties remain under a Winter Weather Advisory until 9 AM Friday February 20, 2026.

Marshall and Tama Counties has been ungraded to a Winter Storm Warning until 6:00 AM on Friday, February 20, 2026. They are now predicting 5-8 inches of snow for those areas.

Poweshiek and Jasper Counties are still in a Winter Weather Advisory until 6:00 AM on Friday, February 20, 2026. 2-4 inches of snow is being predicted for these counties.

..WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 AM CST FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches.

* WHERE...Poweshiek County.

* WHEN...From 6 PM this evening to 6 AM CST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow amounts may vary significantly within any one county.

Jasper, Marshall and Tama Counties 2 to 5 inches of snow accumulation is predicted for your area by Friday morning.

Precipitation will spread from western into central Iowa on Thursday afternoon and evening. Initially, it may begin as rain or a rain/snow mix before changing to snow. Light to moderate snow accumulations are expected by Friday morning, but a narrow band of heavier snowfall is expected with amounts quickly decreasing on either side of the band. Snow rates may near or exceed 1" per hour at times leading to quickly accumulating snow on roads and slick travel conditions. A small change in the location of the band could alter forecast snow amounts.
