Clarke County Democrat Covering what's happening in Grove Hill and the rest of Clarke County!

12/29/2025

CORRECTION: On Dec. 18, the Clarke County Democrat ran a story about a recent Grove Hill City Council meeting. The story's headline was "Grove Hill City Council approves employee bonuses, discusses town hall". This was inaccurate. The city workers received a one-time pay increase, not a bonus. We apologize to the city council for the mistake.

JACKSON — Audra Howell Raybon was elected Jackson’s second female mayor Tuesday by decisively defeating Eldridge Jackson Jr. in a runoff.
Raybon received 886 votes to Jackson’s 669. Jackson carried district 1 but Raybon secured victories in district 2 (379 votes to 141) and district 3 (400 to 234) and had an 87-75 edge in absentee ballots.
Raybon, who had served on the city council, is the city’s second female mayor. Norma Waite Beard served three terms as mayor from 1988 to 2000.
The runoff followed last month’s general election in which Raybon led Jackson 682-400, with incumbent Paul South finishing third. South had served as mayor since 2016.
Thomas “Bubba” Butts was narrowly elected to the council’s district 2, place 1 seat by five votes, edging Darryl Ginwright 279 to 274.
The new administration will take office in November.

GROVE HILL — Thomasville’s varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams swept Clarke County Thursday.

The JV team won 25-8, 25-15 and the varsity won 25-6, 25-20, 25-4.

“I’m extremely proud of both teams tonight. It’s always fun when winning close to home,” Thomasville coach Mary Kate OGuynn said. “My JV girls did a great job tonight at fixing mistakes from the last game they played. They have a lot of potential and have continued to push through each game. They hustled very well and finished strong.

“My varsity has always given me effort and they play aggressively every game. I see growth from them each set and we always finish strong and the girls' effort and communication put them ahead of most games and I’m proud of them for that.”

Thomasville hosts Demopolis on Sept. 8.
